What should I do with this new hdd?

I RMAed a dying WD Black 2TB a while ago. Today I received the replacement. To my great surprise it is NOT a recertified used drive. As a matter of fact it is brand new! WD2003FZEX still in sealed bag just like the WD 5TB I bought a while ago. Should I sell it or keep it? I really don't think I need a total of nearly 10TB of storage(Already have a 500GB SSD, one 5TB WD, one 3TB External and one 2TB WD).

The first drive I ever RMAed was a WD and they gave me an upgrade.. Since then I've bought only WD "HDD" drives and when I ever had to RMA they've always sent me an upgrade

. Maybe my luck but I think its has more to do with the 5yr warranty outlasting stock :laugh:

I'd keep it and stuff it.

So is it possible to make a RAID1 out of two different generations of 2TB? My old 2TB was 2001FAEX and this new one is 2003FZEX.

It's certainly possible but the RAID controller may struggle a bit if the drives' performance differs substantially. You may end up paying quite a large performance penalty in that case.

You do know that RAID is not a backup, but an availability/redundancy solution though, right?

I would check it with Crystal disk to see how many times it has been power on, hours? To see if it really new. Then maybe get rid of the oldest drive you have before it fails. Sell it off (if you have any older than two years)

I rotate my drives out every 2-3 years. You will get almost as much for a used drive as the new ones cost. Doesn't make sense to let one fail

I'm probably not gonna rip open the sealed bag and power it on. Sell it "as is" in a sealed bag may be better.

QFT!! There was a time I thought I'd never fill a 6TB RAID5 volume.. Then when I filled that I added another 12TB RAID6, and now THAT is over half full!!

RAID0 has no redundancy at all.. If one drive fails, ALL data is lost.

RAID isn't a "true" backup solution but it does at least offer some protection against a drive failure, especially in a large, non-enterprise RAID 5 or 6 array where data isn't critical and backup may be infeasible. It's kinda silly to "back up" my 13TB worth of movies, but at least if a drive in one of the arrays bites it there's a high likelihood of recovery, rather than straight up losing a 2TB chunk.

But if they open it and see that its a refurbished drive they might be a little pissed if you sell it as new. You can seal it back up

Search E bay and see what a used Black drive go for compared to a new one

And how many hours are on your old 2Tb drive?

I ALWAYS have a spare. Keeping it is a good move. Just attach it to an external drive and format it to make sure it works and doesn't have 18,000 reallocated sectors because the UPS guy drop-kicked it into the path of a runaway bus.

This happens when they don't have a large supply of returned/repaired drives to send back out for a RMA. I've seen it before - typically with new models.

I would keep it as a spare.
