Cooling Xigmatek Balder 120mm (4x120,1x140mm case)
Memory Patriot 2 Viper Sector 5, 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Video Card(s) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 G1 4GB
Storage 1x Samsung EVO 850 (500GB) SSD, 1x Fujitsu 256GB SSD
Display(s) Dell Ultrasharp U2311h 23" (so sexy)

My friend has an old PC he got for free.
It is a LEADER branded PC, and he was rather exited about it, until we booted it.
When we saw the Windows 98 startup screen, we new why he got it for free.:ohwell:
However, he still wants to make something of it.
Specs are below:
CPU: Intel PIII Celeron, coppermine, Socket 370 @ 733 MHz
RAM: 160 MB (128 + 32), SDRAM @ 66 MHz (133 MHz Capable)
Motherboard: SiS 630S based, single chip solution. 3 PCI slots, inbuilt graphics. No AGP slot
HDD: 9.3 GB IDE, very noisy
CD: 52x CD drive
Network card: 10/100 Fast Ethernet, 56k Dialup Modem
PSU: 350 watts of unstoppable POWAAR!

So, what should he do with it? Its easily expandable, very quiet (excepting the hard drive), would run on a very low power system (I have a mini-ATX 120 Watt PSU lying around), and would probably fit in a shoebox. I'm thinking of a small media center, with more RAM and a better HDD + W2K.
Any other ideas?

media center is a bit of a struggle with a system like that, i'd suggest turning it into a netbox and selling it off.

The only reasons i say this, is from my own testing based on HD media (which is something of a personal requirement for a HTPC, for me) it needs to be under 1 minute in superpi 1M, with a 32MB or greater video card.

do you know of any lightweight linux installs that work well for media?

I'll go Vmware ubuntu and see how it fares, but i'm curious as to how well they'll handle HD media (720p) compared to XP.

Hmm. I reckon he only really wants to play music on it: is there a PC version of XBox Media Center? This PC has similar specs...

windows 2000 would make a lite OS for a media system, of course it would take some tweaking to get setup

Cool, it looks like you can create a bootable flash drive for XBMC.
I'll do that, except using a CD! How would I install it though?

i never knew you could do that! lol......

are you sure its saying you can do that for a PC & not an xbox...?

Modern routers have processors running around 200mhz. Imagine what you could make out of that pc if you shoved a whole bunch of pci lan cards in it and made it into a super router... you can use untangle to do it,

It only has 3 PCI slots... :(
But yeah, can you copy the files from a bootable disk onto a hard drive and then boot from the HDD?

I have two old PC's pretty similar to yours and my plan for them is basically just little file server boxes. All I want them to do is store my important files and music. I totally agree with the not believing in PC Heaven/Hell.

No, DOSgames work fine, but for example Redline Racer (I loved that) only works under Win95/98...

The world is unfair... I'm searching my ass off for such a computer to play my really old but fun games who dont work on xp... and you just get one :(

It shouldn't be too hard to find one: just ring up your local council, and ask if they have a PC Recycling program: if they do, you'll find one there.;)

id put linux on that pc or even get windows 2000 on it as mentioned before.

Windows 98 wont hack it these days even if you want to play DOS games.

You could play Civilization 2 maybe 3, Age of Empires 1 and 2, maybe even the old first command and conquer that is now a FREE download from EA i think.

A lot of DOS games will work, you can get a new hard drive 40gb or 80gb for less than £20 from ebay inc shipping/postage if you plan on keeping it id go for one of those and then id get a old pci graphics card, ATI preferably i had on old 9200pro PCI but i think i gave it away lol.

I have some old ram that is 128mb sd ram, pretty sure the ram you have is fine id reccomend a minimum of about 128mb ram for anythign these days.

Who knows if you want it for internet and music i guess with a bigger hard drive to store everything it could be useful.

If you want to play video tho HD stuff you need a good graphics card because that CPU will have trouble with video.

OR clock the pc untill it sparks and blows out or untill it melts, then post some pics for us too see lol.
