I am buy a HDTV next week.
I will also be getting a PS3 later as a blue ray player. I already have a BR player on my PC and I output to my friends HDTV (LCD 720p).

So who uses what tech and why as far as HDTV's? LCD, Plasma, DLP.

I will be going full 1920x1080 (of course) and I am interested in 120Hertz instead of the normal 60.

I don't like the grainy look of some LCD's so I am thinking about a DLP. And the DLP has both the resolution and 120Hertz + they are about 1/2 the price. So I think it's a done deal for me.

What do you have or want?

As long as you (and the people who will be watching the display most) aren't disturbed by any of the "rainbow effect" that occurs when your eyes scan the display.

I can't take it. But like you said: the price/screen size ratio can't be beat.

Check it out in person.

Unless you are on a tight budget, Sony's SXRD sets are my personal favorite if you condsider all areas of IQ (resolution, contrast, color reproduction and black levels).

I think the Samsungs look the nicest in person. I'm pretty pissed that after finally taking the plunge last year and buying a 32" 1080i LCD the prices now are almost the same for a 40" 1080p LCD...

I would wager that most of the people out there who love LCD have never seen a DLP HDTV. Guys, when you go to the movies (new theaters) they all have the Digital Light Processing (DLP) Projectors.

Also anyone know the 120 vs. 60 Hertz and why that important during action?

samsung or (shutter) sony (shutter) i don't really like sony but there tv's are really nice.

The samsung LN-T4061F Is really nice.

120hz is only good for fast action like sports. its really a gimmick from everything the guys in hometheater tell me at the best buy i work at.

So my choice is either the samsung or a KDL-40XBR4

The guys in Best Buy don't work on commision and IME (I My Experience) don't have any reason to know what they are talking about. I don't go to Best Buy to learn about the tech I just go there to get it. I don't think Best Buy sells DLP at all and to say that 120 only matters for sports/action is like saying IMO that it is only for people who will watch sports or action movies, or play games.

Just my 2 cents on Best Buy. They tried to sell me the New Sony 120Hrtz for $3,600 for 46" where at Frys I can get 55" for $1,500 that's 120Hrtz with the new 6 color, color wheel. So has less of a chance of people seeing the rainbow effect.

I should mention that I am an IT guy for 8 years and now I work for Fuji Film in the Medical Imaging side of things so I am now an image quality snob and some of that bleeds over to my choice for HDTV.

Thanks,

well you did ask for opinions.

Some of the people who work at best buys are complete retards!

There are 3 best buys were i live and honestly the only one i have found useful is the one i live closet to and the one i work. Now it sounds biosed but the other 2 best buys dont know what there talking about.

I went to one and asked for a keyboard that my store had on clearence and the manager said it was the "new" one and i was like what are you talking about, no it isn't and he bluntly said i couldnt have it.

So i understand what your saying.

I back LCDs. I own a 65" 1080p Mitsubishi DLP as well as a 40" Sony XBR2 1080p LCD. The LCDs picture just can't be beat. Also, 120hz is useless, its a gimmick. Sounds & Vision as well as CEPro both did reviews on it and the verdict was that it did NOTHING. My Sony's picture is crystal clear and I don't have any of the graininess that you speak of. I professionally calibrated both of my TVs using ISF settings.

EDIT: Also 1Strive I can tell you for a fact that some people at Best Buy care about the technology and steering customers the right way. I was one of those people. Oh and if you haven't noticed, the DLP theaters image quality is sort of shitty. Its grainy and just not as clear.

You have a Mitsubishi DLP and you perfer the Sony LCD? Price vs. What? For me Price vs. Size and Quality = DLP Winner.

I am sorry about the Best Buy comment that has just been my experience with the one I go to.

Thanks for your input.

Not trying to sound snide, but it seems you've already made up your mind.

So why the thread? Looks like YOU are trying to convince people that DLP is the shiz...

Not at all, because I have a 720p Optoma DLP Projector running on a 105" screen and it looks amazing.

Right , but you are comparing a 65" to a 40". The bigger the screen no matter what technology you use, your eyes will like the IQ of the smaller screen. IMO:toast:

i'd say get a DLP. that's just my budgeted opinion, as long as you have the space for a big one, can handle moving the weight, and have a good place to put it (no wall hanging like an LCD can, obviously) then get a DLP. there isn't much of a reason not to go for the overall quality vs. performance vs. price you get against an LCD. unless money is no option and you can shell out for the nicest LCD out there, then get a DLP!

hence why i bought a 19" 1680x1050 lcd monitor instead of a 22 or 24" with the same res.

DLPs aren't very heavy...also I still disagree with the smaller monitor having a better IQ. This is speaking from many years of A/V experience. A Pioneer Elite 60" Plasma has way better IQ than most 40" and lower LCDs.
