What will be the best upgrade? (Processor vs. GFX)

As it is your setup is fine . I am not sure you would get any better performance from the E8500 or the 9800GT as well they are both a lateral move . You would get a jump in performance by getting a GTX260 or a 4870 X2 this is for sure if gaming is all the performance you are looking for . If it is benchmarks and and more response in loading things like windows , or rendering or video encoding and the like then getting a Quad core can and will give you a boost no matter what any one els says there is a huge market for the quad cores if there wasn't then no one would bother making them as there is really no need to put that kind of cash into making a quad core if all you really needed was a dual core , progress is like that .
I have my Idea of moving forward and others have theres you must ask your self what do you think moving forward is for you .

Didn't read posts above .. but ...

I max most games @ 1920x1080, with that said, you really shouldn't need an upgrade.

PS: I am looking into a 4830 or possibly crossfiring an X2 with the current 3870

Yeah save it up and get some thing that is going to really give you what you want .
The problem with always saving and waiting is you never get into a grove , You wait but still you wait and still you wait every one always says wait when do you just act ? if you are always waiting you are never doing . seems stupid not to act once in a while . At least to me it does . but keep waiting and saving and well by the time you are all done doing what every one els tells you to do no one will tell you to act and you my friend are the one still waiting .
Tell me just what is it that the OP is waiting for ? When should the OP act ? when AM3 comes out ? when i5 comes out just when and what are you saying save up for what the OP did not give any real budget for any one to work with other than a cheap video card and a cheap CPU . Act or wait it is up to you .

You could do SLI for a performance upgrade...I have 2- 8800 gt in SLI and get 50-80 FPS in Crysis. Alot of my bench marks in 3dmark06 are close or even beat gtx260..Would be a decent upgrade for a small price!! u can't do SLi at Intel Chipset, it's Crossfire only :roll:

1.35 should but you at 4ghz quite comfortably. However the 8800gt and 9800gt are pretty much the same card. I would learn about overclocking more, and get thet cpu to at least 4GHz, and try to get the memory to 500MHz (1000MHz after DDR) just to be cool. :cool:

Incase anybody is interested, my E2180 with a 4870 512MB is faster in Crysis at everything high and 2x AA @ 1440x900, than my sisters E8400 with Geforce 9600GT 512 at high and no AA @ 1280x1024. My minimum is about 10 frames faster than hers, and max is about 5 more.
