Here in NZ that wouldn't happen if were to be signed for and if it did happen and they have a signature but it wasn't you or anyone at the house you can have them fired for fraud

even if my neighbour was a complete C??? I wouldn't let it be stolen by anybody else but me LOL actually I'd pick it up and hold it till I could get hold them and tell them to come pick it up or just take it over as soon as I saw them at home

Either way. Either they were dumb to order it a month before they moved in or It could possibly be some illegal business going on. Ive heard of drugs being delivered in plain old regular boxes by UPS to empty vacant houses with instructions for the box to be left outside the door. Then someone comes along later and picks the package up.

I mean If i get to it first and its drugs & a monitor then even better.

To be honest, I'd probably grab it and keep it myself.

I would take it into your house for safekeeping, then call UPS and explain the situation to them. They can call the neighbour and find out if the package needs to be sent elsewhere, or if s/he is okay with you holding on to it until they move in. Maybe their plans have changed and they're moving in early and that's why they sent it there, who knows?

AFAIK this kind of thing does not happen in the UK, it seem to only happen in the USA & some other parts of the world.

The rightful thing to do is to keep it safe until the rightful owner turns up otherwise it will get stolen. Leave a note stating you have a parcel for them. You had time to take a photo, let's hope it's still there if you return & do the right thing.

The system of delivering packages without calling receipient beforehand and requiring a signature of receipt on delivery is the dumbest thing humanity has come up with in its history.

it wouldnt be there for long if left, id take it into my house for safe keeping and wait for nextdoor to move in. im a astronomer and its best to have good standing with the neighbors and plus im happy with my laptop.

I agree with the above. Take it in and tape a note that says to come see you when he/she is available.

However, you would have to know them already, or ask for proof of identity before releasing it to them. I don't see much issue as long as you state why you did so in the note.

Inform the delivery service of what you have done
and ask them to contact the intended receipent with relevent details
of where the package can be picked up from
UPON PROOF OF PURCHACE/Ownership.

Your need confirmation of collection in writing just to safeguard yourself from any future claims.

Well since it's on the forums, being the nice guy I am, I'd try and get hold of the neighbour and say, UPS delivered and send him a photo.. Then say, would you like me to keep hold and then wait till he turns up and say, ummm, could we get a freebie??

IMHO, if you are posting here and advocating for taking the package for yourself, TPU should ban you for life, since theft is wrong, and should NEVER be condoned or encouraged in any way, shape or form, regardless of the situation.....

As far as I am concerned, the neighbors are responsible for their own packages, and should not have ordered it to arrive prior to their move in date....

And no, I am not claiming to be a saint or a do-gooder, lord knows I have done somethings in my past that I probably should not have, but even so, I believe that minding your own business is generally the best approach in most situations, unless it involves something dangerous or life-threatening of course.

Also, consider what would happen if the package in question contains something bad or illegal (a bomb, drugs, stolen items etc)..... if you grab it for yourself or even to hold onto for your neighbors, you have just made yourself an accessory to whatever they are involved in....

It's not going to be a bomb or drugs, that would have been scan & checked by UPS. You can check the tracking number to confirm it is genuine on UPS website. If it's stolen goods he just has to explain where he got it from which would match UPS data log, so he would be in the clear, after all the item is not address to him.
