I've been having a lot of fps lag lately with the card I have, so I might as well get myself a brand new card. I was thinking about getting myself either a Nvidia GTX 650 Ti or a Radeon 7770. I don't know which one to get honestly, since my friend said that Radeon GPUs won't work with my computer, which I think is a load of BS but meh. This is my computer http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/asus-essentio-cm6730-us010s/4507-3118_7-35576123.html All the specs you need are right there.

You likely WON'T see TOO much improvement with a 150$ GPU over the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 3GB that Your PC has. ANY PCI-E 3.0 GPU and Down WILL work on That board, AMD or Nvidia, whoever told YOu it wouldn't is mis-informed. If your DEAD set on the purchase, I would recommend an AMD, since your more likely to get More HP for Your $$ with them @ that price point.

this ones Not terrible, but only a Gb of RAM.

I would recommend that You try and save until You have 250$ or so, that will give you a better Jump in performance. a 7950, 7870Ghz , or a 7970.

Well, I'm having overheating issues with this card, so I have to replace it. Besides, I hate being on the brink of losing, due fps lag due to overheating.

What in the hell are you talking about? The GT640s are shit for gaming, getting a HD7770 is about 50% more performance across the board(At least what I saw from Anandtech. TPU shows a bit different benchmarks).

OP where are you located so we can recommend you cards where you will likely be buying from.

And what your friend said is a load of BS. Also another question is what games do you play?

First off the PSU scares me it says 300w I would say absolute min. of 350W
Here are the cards I recommend
Best Bang for buck 7790 1GB $95 after MIR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131491
R7 260X 2GB $120 MIR is only 2% faster than 7790, same GPU only 100MHz increase with added Memory 2GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127762
650TI 1GB $110 MIR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127725

300w is fine as long as the PSU does indeed supply 300w (meaning it isn't an el-cheapo "300w" PSU). My rig gets to ~400w under 100% load (IBT + Furmark) so I suppose his peaks at 200w or so.

I concur with the 650Ti recommendation although that might put the load in the upper limits for that PSU. I would think of upgrading the PSU first to a good >400w model.

I'm in SoCal bro sp Frys and Best Buy are the only good places I can buy some stuff besides online. I play a lot of games though, the main ones I play are Continent of the Ninth Seal, Dragon Nest, all Counter Strike versions, Strike Suit Zero, Tera, Osu!, and a crap ton more. In pretty much all of these games, I have fps lag, except for Osu!, all Counter Strike versions besides GO, and Quake Live, so I'll need an upgrade.

What power supply are you getting? That AMD 260x is the card I would get if I were you. Buy from Newegg. More choices.

That is probably not the reason at all. 300w is fine, even if he's not pushing it, that 640 consumes ~50w.

Well, if the PSU is no concern and you don't mind buying used, 7870s are being sold into the >$150 range.

I was going to buy myself a 450-500w PSU.

But what brand PSU? As wattage is one thing, but buying a high quality unit from a reputable brand is also important.

Don't get that. Not a bad unit per se but 1) It doesn't deliver its advertised wattage, only 450w:

and 2) no PFC so you'll get <75% efficiency.

For that price, get a Corsair CX430 V2. It delivers more wattage on the 12V rail than the Extreme Power 500 (max 12v for the CX430 is 384w, max 12V for the extreme power 500 is 360w) plus it has 80plus Bronze certification

If you want to spend about $160, the 650Ti Boost SC 2Gb is an absolute deal. All of it's performance numbers are nearly at GTX 660 level, along with being fairly quiet, and running cool.

EDIT: I see you picked one out. At least you are going with a 650Ti. Only thing is the 1GB memory wont give you a lot of longevity.

EDIT 2: Never mind me, both the 1 and 2 gig EVGA's of the card I mentioned are out of stock...AGAIN.

You want to buy a good PSU at all cost. I messed with other brands years ago and they'd last maybe a year or 2 tops before blowing out. Finally got smart and spent more for an Antec...suckers are still going strong.

Other makers have gotten better but I honestly won't buy anything but Antec again. Not after what I went through with budget brands.

Once you solve that PSU issue, you have a lot of options open. You don't necessarily have to go with a brand new board. If you want a lot of power for that price, you could shop in the used GPU area. I'm running a used 460 with my main one right now. Never had an issue with it. Just have to carefully read the details from the seller or ask the guys here to review it for you and they'll tell you if its a good deal.

Well I see a potential 2GB GTX 650 Ti (no boost) that I can buy, could that work?

Edit: Also how can I know how big my PSU is so I don't end up buying the wrong one?

Look up the specs and reviews if possible.

For $50, the CX430M is a nice deal.

Will it handle the card even though it's only 430w?

Yes. nVidia recomends a 600w PSU but that's because they don't know what you have installed in your computer so they err on the side of caution.

Just look at the SteamBox prototype: a Core i5 @ 3.3Ghz, 16GB of DDR3-1866 RAM, a GTX780, hard drive and a couple of fans are being powered with a 450w PSU: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Steam Machine Teardown/20473

I bet your peak load won't get north of 300w, the 650ti itself has a maximum power draw of 110w, you have a 69w CPU and the rest of the hardware amounts to 60, 80w at most.

400w is plenty for nowadays energy efficient components.
