whats that sound?

my new seagate 750GB SATA2 HDD is making strange sounds.. like like ticking wherein sounds... i fear it could already be dieing (after only using it for 9 days)

RMA time. The ticking sound means that it is accessing data, but on that high end drive, it should not be noticeable.

well its pretty loud lol (like 56k dial up modem connecting to the net loud)

it freaks me out a bit because i did buy it through the net and when it was delivered the post ppl didn't knock on the door or anything.. they just sort of left it on my front doorstep as if they were worried about something...

The drive is undergoing problems with parking. Just keep an eye on the SMART values, use Everest or SpeedFan.

If a drive is failing it should perform inconsistently with bechmarks. look for unusual values.

Anyways keep a backup handy.

Does it sound as loud as drives used to sound back in the 90's ? that loud?

not quite lol but it does sound worse then the 20gb IDE Seagate i got back in 2001 does xD (well now at least)

Use the TPU Systool and run the drive benchmark at random whenever you get those sounds. If you get irregular values each time you run it, I'd say: BACK UP MATE!!!
