What's the primary resolution/refresh rate you're gaming at (2021)?

It's called marketing. Pushing people to buy things they don't actually need or will use at it's full potential at the time of release. The early adopters become the beta testers.

The same thing happened when LCD/Plasma TVs at 1080p were being marketed when most networks were broadcasting at 480p and some at 720p.

yea but then you had to buy your DVD player with HDMI so you could "upscale" the 480p image to 720p....

while I'm one of those 40% I will say having been to several microcenters and Best buys the past few months, it's all 1080p high refresh they are pushing and moving. In microcenters case they have large stacks of them all over the store like pyramids.

2560 x 1440 @ 144Hz (max supported 165Hz). G-Sync supported but off. Also have a 1080p 75Hz (downclocked to 72Hz to stop high idle clocks on NVIDIA GPUs) as my secondary, where I keep Discord and such.

I do not care at all about anything higher, ultrawide, curved etc. This resolution and refresh rate is enough to sastisfy young me's dreams, considering I used to have a 1366 x 768 display at 60 Hz. Hated it.

It's one of those things that it's hard to go back once you've gotten a taste. I have 1440p 34" UW at home, and on vacation had to game on my wife's new 15.6" RTX3060 laptop. Ew. Ew. Ew. I caught myself like 6" from the screen at times trying to see things. lol

It's unfortunate it's such a price hike to get out of 1080p land these days. Fuzzy math I wager it's almost 3x more $$ to go from 1080p to 1440p UW.

1440p 144Hz checking in. Easy enough for my 5700XT to still push high FPS in esports titles, but a nice resolution increase over 1080p for the singleplayer stuff.

The share of 4K users is relatively small even here among enthusiasts.

Between the cost of high-refresh 4K panels and now the absurd cost/availability of GPUs necessary to properly utilize that expensive monitor, it's probably out of reach for a good amount of people. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that (I'm one of those people). I would guess the investment required for a tangible benefit is a lot lower going from 1080p to 1440p than it is from 1440p to 4K.
