Direct X 10 is supposedly a Windows Vista only feature and no plans for XP to have it. Linkage

So when Vista ships Direct X 10 should be with and Direct X 9 will work with it too. XP will not get 10 though. So bottom line your going to be waiting 6 months or more my guess. For DirectX10 Cards perhaps or a bit sooner.

guess it will be a long way from dx9 cards to dx 10 cars because dx 9 programms dont run under dx 10
and so even if you have a dx 10 card it will use in most things dx 9 so long time before everything changed there

It will be many years before you see anything that won't run on DX9 hardware. DX9 prices will not plummet as well, they will just go along as normal only getting lower with newer released, ad not by a large margain. DX10 is not going to forced on us as they would sacrifice 90% of the market of people buying software because upgrading to get DX10 will be expensive and foolhardy. Developers will be coding both versions on future games/software for a very long time.
