First? Do you run some benchmarks of the games you've been playing to see how they perform? Just test for temps? Overclocking?? The usual boring ones 3D Mark etc? Heaven? Valley??

I'm just wondering what to run before I swap out to my new card.... Wondered what people might suggest :) Are there many built in gaming benchmarks for games these days??

Look forward to the replies :D And thank you for your time :)

I always take a dump before and go light on coffee. You don't want any distractions or shaky hands while assembling the PC, do you?
I'm just wondering what to run before I swap out to my new card.... Wondered what people might suggest :) Are there many built in gaming benchmarks for games these days??
Well.. I'd suggest playing some games before and then, when you switch to the new card, you can play some more games. Who knows... maybe they'll look better or something.

I mean: sure, why not run something to compare to results from the web? Just to check if the card's all right.
But benchmarkS? Plural...? Seriously?

Benchmark Scores ask your mother
The only reason I ever benchmark a GPU is when stability testing an overclock Im not sure on. Brand new, stock Id just play my favorite games and monitor temps, usage, fps here and there.

For my GPU overclocks Ill use a few unigine ones as well as 3dmark. Nowhere near as in depth as a cpu overclock for me, where Ill put it under a variety of loads for extended periods. Just enough to know temps and stability are gonna be on point. Past that I dont really care to. If it crashes, which rarely ever happens I make an adjustment and go back to playing. No big deal... not like a CPU or RAM oc where you can corrupt data and brick your OS...

The next time I'll upgrade anything I'll just see if I think the game is running smoother. If it does, win. If it doesn't, regret.

Numbers are interesting and fun and all that, but in the end the sole purpose of them is to compare tgose numbers to that of others.

Heaven, Valley, Superposition, Time Spy, Fire Strike. Then overclock and run them again to see the gains, and get an idea how well/not well it overclocks.

I don't do performance monitoring while gaming. Ever. The card either runs a game at playable speeds with ultra settings at the highest resolution possible, or it doesn't. I don't care what the FPS is. And I won't play a game at a lower resolution or without the settings maxed. So I don't care about whether those make any difference. If it runs slow...tough shit. It's gonna run slow until I upgrade something. Whatever...

Interesting replies here :)

Well I tend to test most things I buy just so I know limits and so I have a base line of it's performance else how would you know when your tweaking it right or wrong? But as with everything most things are down to personal choice which is why I asked for peoples thoughts :)

If I bought something that was not running correctly @MrGenius then I'd have bought the wrong thing and I should be slapped because of it.. I like to see what things do so I do game with the MSI Afterburner on screen display thing with just a few settings turned on, such as GPU temp/usage, core clocks and then just the normal ones like frame rate just to see what things are doing.. Some games are alright that I play with 30 fps, others I prefer at least 60 fps.. But then I guess if I wasn't so bothered, I'd have V Sync enabled and just leave it all go :)

Thanks for the ideas and I'll report back when I get the new cards in :)

Pretty much test gaming. Which is hard to do under linux. Thank god for this rtx snafu, I just ordered a 980ti to replace my 970. For 2/3s the price.
Still faster than a 1070. Nice. World of Warships at 300fps anyone? Yes gaming under linux limited.... there are better things to do.....

That the rig actually boots into windows with no BSOD would be my first victory....
Depending on time. Run some 3D benchies at default settings for comparison later when / if OC the card.
Apart from that, play games & enjoy life.... :toast:

Whenever i change GPU for other people - i run benchies and stress tests. When change happens on my rig, i run my fav game first, then overcloking and benchmarks so i know the limits of this particular car. And then leave clocks on defaults :D

Nowadays I just play some games. Wanted to see how much better the new card run compared to the old at the same settings before I ramp the setting up :D

Used to be different back in the day, I remember buying first DirectX 8 card which is Abit Siluro Geforce4 Ti4200 and the very first thing I do after installing driver is watch 3DMark2001 Game test 4: Nature Test. I just awe in amazement on how pixel shader could change the game look from flat boring textures to shiny reflective surfaces.

This scene in particular. I've never seen more realistic water without using ANY kind of pixel shaders. Water in UT99 looked super nice, but it was still just flat where here, it actually has a third dimension with waves. Actual physical waves. Just amazing.

Anything that relevant to you, to see is there (any) improvement. If it is gaming, then game, if work than the progs you use.
I usually do a 3dmark, unigine heaven, valley, superposition, luxmark, blender (gpu side) and games what i play or have a benchtool.
Of course during i check temps, noise.

The amount of times I've watched that benchmark, oh man... :) These newer benchmarks from 3D Mark/Futuremark/UL Benchmark, I think they have lost it a little bit.. With the 2001SE they used the Matrix film scene as a test, the Nature tests in 03 was amazing and so on.. Still, I tend to use other tests rather than those now.. (Still run them but only for the end result, don't like them as such..)

Well that's what I'll be doing very shortly... I've just finished playing games, getting a few tests done.. So plug in time :) The only thing I'm wondering is what SLI connector I'll need to get it to work...

Yep, after installing your new card you first want to know if it's working as should. Benchmarks and various testing software will determine that for you. After that it's gaming and overclocking or seeking the cards limit, if you're into that ofcourse. If your games play great maxed out, overclocking shouldn't be a priority.

I run some benches and gameplay on the old rig and save the settings somewhere, then re-run them with the new GPU. To get a handle on what I've really gained, and how the tech works in terms of temp curve and stuff.

After that I generally explore what's in the can in terms of an OC... apply that, and start gaming.

If you have to ask what to run on a new card... you didn't need to upgrade ;)

Depends what and how many gpus, i still like messing for the sake of messing and benching to beat My bests , mostly 3dmark if im honest ,I like its consistency.
But Im also a fan of odd benches just because, like physx mark but only in hybrid mode just to see it works still.

Benchmark Scores I've actually never benched it!! Too busy with WCG and FAH and not gaming! :( :( Not OC'd it!! :(
If I run anything, it's FurMark to see how the card behaves under severe load.

From the standard profile, I've yet see the temps creep over the 70C mark, I've not bothered with FurMark as yet, but I've been getting an idea of where the fan profile sits to what temps it gets to. I feel about the 50 to 60% mark should have a nice and cool card :) I'm curious about how the two will cope....

Yep, after installing your new card you first want to know if it's working as should. Benchmarks and various testing software will determine that for you. After that it's gaming and overclocking or seeking the cards limit, if you're into that ofcourse. If your games play great maxed out, overclocking shouldn't be a priority.

From what I've done so far, just playing about with not tweaking anything even the fan profile, I'm able to run everything at max without any issues really. The only slight issue I've noticed is running WCG whilst testing has limited it's performance somewhat, but I didn't think it would have been so much.. But again thinking about it, the fan profile probably hasn't helped matters really, so I'll see if changing it helps with the temps and possibly how long and high the card boosts too :)

I've only changed the GPU out, so I've done some tests with my 1070 and then done exactly the same tests on the new card, I've not yet tried with two but I didn't order a high speed connector as I didn't know what sort of spacing I would need or want for the cards, so I'll work that out as I've a few older SLI bridges from my X58 and my TRI and Quad SLI days :)
I think it'll be a waste of these cards running at 1080P, I think it'll be even more of a waste if the games I play doesn't support SLI at all, but some of the tests I've run I'm hoping that it'll play even better than it already does. 1440P would have been a very nice happy medium but sadly I've not got any more space for 3 more monitors right now  Plus I really need to get my girl friends and daughters Ryzen systems setup and running.. That's next on my agenda :)

Normally I just run the games I like to play and increase the settings and see what the performance is like.

Sadly I've not really been able to up the settings any further really at they are already set to max but I think half the battle is being mostly older games and I think SLI works with them, so I'm hoping for some crazy frame rates :D I think I might have to overclock my 5960X a little further again to see if we can get another bump up :)

Depends what and how many gpus, i still like messing for the sake of messing and benching to beat My bests , mostly 3dmark if im honest ,I like its consistency.
But Im also a fan of odd benches just because, like physx mark but only in hybrid mode just to see it works still.

I'm the same but the amount of times I've watched all of those tests... Man if I had a £1 for every test I'd run...

1. Install water block(s).

2. Use Furmark to thermally cycle TIM 3 - 4 times.

3. Set OC to review settings

4. Make table of GPU temps versus pump speeds to dial in speed curve.

5. Rinse and repeat for fan curves.

6. Run the "usual suspects" benchmarks to see if OC settings need adjustment. Save profile when done.

7. Run various games and see if everything holds up.

8. Make a slightly lower OC profile for those weird games
