Hi lads

I've got a decent setup at the moment.. however both my motherboard and CPU are ageing.. I was wondering what some of you would concentrate on upgrading next? the 480 will do a decent job for the next year I suppose.. however it's not making any use of my monitor when it comes to AAA gaming..

Perhaps my motherboard/CPU could do with being replaced? I've heard of the new AMD CPU's that are incoming.. they sound rather decent ey? but when it comes to a motherboard.. I Wouldn't have a clue what to look for anymore.. CrossFire came to mind.. tried it last year and it wasn't terrific.

Give me all of your thoughts lads.. criticism is always welcome ;)

I would change only the CPU to i7 3770K. Such configuration should be fine for the next 3-4 years.

the 480 will do a decent job for the next year I suppose..
:) It will be very good for the next 4-5 years with 1080p monitor.

So my GTX1070 will be good for the next 7-8 years @1080p?

Considering the 7970 was released 6 years ago and the 280x is pretty much a rebadge and can still play games fairly well at 1080p it might not be that far fetched

I assume you are mostly gaming on that computer, for that the setup will be good for a long time, the weakest link in the future will probably be the GPU.

IF you care about power consumption then a newer CPU/MB might help, since the 2600k at 4.4 Ghz probably uses a lot more that the standard 95W
Note hover that unless the power prices get to the 2 - 3 €/kWh range the price for newer hardware will not pay itself in lower energy bills, it will however lower the heat output from the computer.

as stated above, the 280x is still a capable card, my 290x i s good at 2560 x 1600 so the 480 could be good for a long time.

For a better experience i would maybe look at the input (mouse and keyboard) and output devices (screen and sound system)to get the most out of the computer.

I have to agree with most above me that you have a decent system for gaming, since that's what it sounds like you are using it for. GPU is probably good for a solid 2-1/2 to 3 years. You've got the 16GB of RAM I recommend, and a fast CPU.

I'd leave it as is for 2 more years. I wouldn't even bother going to a 3770k unless you happen upon a chance to get one cheap.

That would be correct, it's mostly a gaming setup along with Blu-ray goodness ;)

I was considering purchasing the Edifier 1800 2.0 speaker system as I have the latest Logitech 2.1 setup.. but far too muddy for my tastes >.>
I rather like the mouse that I use now, and it was a gift last year for Christmas.. can't be throwing that away just yet ;)

I'm guessing a CrossFire 480 setup wouldn't be truly worth pursuing? I've read that it'd draw about 330Watts.. no thanks :p

Did a price check on PriceSpy.. cheapest was 350 euro.. damn they are ridiculously expensive to buy even now ;s

I'm in similar situation now, was thinking to upgrade to i7 7700k as Arma 3 seems to perform it a bit better on it when combined with fast DDR4 RAM but decided to wait a little while. Bought RAM and PSU already, now just waiting for Zen to be released and then i will decide if i go with blue or green team.

Yes, for some reason they are running 2/3 to 3/4 of their new price due to high demand. I figure the supply of socket 1155 motherboards that can make use of them has to be dwindling, since motherboards usually become dead long before CPU's.

If your getting the details of what you want in games forget about upgrading any thing. Just be happy with what you have as doing the other you will never be happy.

Overall not worth it. be better of waiting until late this year at least, same here but the gains are not worth it at all. And you know INTEL are going react with force once AMD get there new chips out ( speaking as if they are going give Intel some thing to react to that is ).

Peripherals are much more of a personal choice than the internals of a computer, so if the mouse works great for you then keep it.

A good sound systems does help with immersion in games, and they usually last a long time.

Phff, only 330 W? two 290x in CF should pull ca 500 W before overclock, boos tthe power throtle to + 50% with good cooling and the cards will not throttle before you reach 700 W, that is a space heater.

It also underlines the advantage of newer hardware, two 290x under water with drivers that work in the game being tested will trade blows with one 1080, but the 1080 will use 170 W, where the two 290x end up at 500 W.

You could get a complete new system in the same box you have now, the biggest difference will be the heat output, and the missing money in your wallet.

Well, not sure about if he will be gaming 1080p in 7-8 yrs.
I believe the graphics and gaming will be exponentially better in the next 5, with the VR and the 7nm coming.
Which will make anyone game at 1080p, un attractive option :D

Im not using 1080P. I'm using 5:4.

I crank the details to maximum.
