i decided to save $80 and bought a gigabyte instead of an EVGA 2080 Ti. Just now realized that I'm an idiot. the card crashes with even moderate amount of OC because the max power target is 109%....

i flashed EVGA 2080 TI Xc Ultra BIOS onto it, but now i'm getting some weird unidentified hardware showing up in my device manager. the card can hit higher frequencies now but the hardware manager issue is annoying me. any idea which BIOS i should use? or si there a way to modify it to just accept higher power targets?

thanks

Yes the one that came with the card, unless it's a reference PCB and there is no physical difference between boards in hardware you may find you just tryin to push shit up hill

Ask gigabyte.

Also update your Motherboard BIOS make sure your power supply is within specification for that new card. all else fails send the card back.

Send me the crashing sounds like you got a faulty card also update your motherboard drivers

wernt these gpu's separated into oc and oc limited and then shipped. Theres an actual difference in the name of your 2080ti on the gpu die itself. i'd be whipping the cooler off to make sure I had the overclockable version. :toast:

You bought a 1200$ card and the first thing you did is flash a different BIOS on it. Damn.

Is it possible that you don't understand the mechanics of OC on Turing?

During light loads, the cards will go to very high boost clocks, for a moment and will then go to lower clocks when it detects it's running in power limit.
These high clock spikes are probably what's crashing your card.

If it were me

I’d flash it back to stock BIOs and let precision boost handle boost clocks

It’s not worth damaging a $1000+ GPU for maybe a 5-10% performance gain

Like mentioned above not all Turing cards OC the same

Do u really need to OC that card ? i don't know what's the purpose of overclocking a 2080 TI , just keep it stock + u will not be happy if u killed that 1200-1800$ card while flashing BIOS.

set up a more aggresive fan curve and oc memory only is what I'd do with a turing card.

yep your better off just leaving the core as it is, you could bump the memory a little possibly.

the gpu should oc/boost itself to its specific bin at that fan speed. you could turn up the fan as wizard suggests and the cooler gpu will allow boost to oc/boost further. you could oc it but there really isnt anything out there that needs an overclocked 2080ti unless its for benchmarking purposes... even then do you want to sit gaming with the fans at 100percent...
ive never needed to oc my titan and your right up there with virtually the same performance. good luck with it :toast:

ok... so much useless "advice" here. don't OC, you don't know how to OC, i can't afford this card therefor you should mess with yours, blah blah blah. thanks a lot.

in any case, if someone find this thread later and has similar issues, the problem was combination of a bad nvidia driver (games crashes even at stock) and the microsoft 1809 fall update (device manager shows intel and nvidia devices as malfunctioning). the microsoft update has since been recalled. i rolled back the windows update with acronis and went back to nvidia's 411.7 driver and that fixed everything

the BIOS flash to EVGA's CX Ultra BIOS went great and the 130% power target allows me to run at 90MHz higher on the GPU and 450MHz higher on memory in any game i tried, getting an extra 5 FPS or so in 4K gaming.

@cucker tarlson the card is watercooled, as indicated in the system specs.
@eidairaman1 the PSU is a Corsair AX1600i, just as indicated in the system specs, the best PSU money can buy should be within specs i think.
@purecain this model is factory overclocked, as denoted by the "OC" in the cards name, which means it's a "A" binned card.

I thought Gigabyte has a 380Watt BIOS, which is even better than the EVGA ones.

Anyway your OC should be higher. Try the OC scanner in Afterburner. Mine sits +125 core and +500 VRAM for regular usage. The core can go as high as +174 but the fan noise is unbearable

1. Use the one that was on the card when you bought it.

2. Though unintentional, you made the better choice. We usually don't pay any more, but would pay a significant amount if I had to to avoid the EVGA card. Since 5xx EVGA SC has been using Reference PCBs and cheaping out on PCB cooling while the competition beefs up the PCBsS with bigger / beefier VRMs. With the EVGA 970 SC's 1/3 of the heat sink actually "missed" the GPU. When ya read the PCB breakdown page in the roundup teardown articles you didn't have to read the performance pages to know which one was going to finish on bottom. With 1060 - 080, they cheaped out on the PCB cooling and cards were going up in smoke like back with the 5xx series. This time they addressed it by allowing users to return for upgrades of they'd ship out thermal pads.

Which Gigglebyte card did you get ?

Are you taking into account the factory OC when you look at the adjustment the boost you see in Afterburner ? Reference allows a 23% boost in power limit but factory OC on AIB cards will eat most of that leaving only 10-11% extra. Strix has teeny factoy OC boost on Power Limit.

Giagabyte Gaming OC = 11% over factory OC (269 watts) - 299
