GTX 285 or HD 4870 1GB? Would the price difference between the two make the Nvidia card worth it, being more expensive, or would I be better off with the one from ATi, cheaper albeit with less performance?

An upgrade of my whole system is definitely overdue. :p

Well I would say whatever you can afford. If you can get the GTX 285 then that is what I would get.

If your gonna continue to run that p4 cpu, I wouldn't bother upgrading. Your CPU will bottleneck either of those card so bad, you won't get any gains from the upgrade.

Id wait to see how the Radeon 4890 will turn out in speed first before deciding.

Exactly right.

Upgrade the rest of your PC before you go getting a beast like the GTX285.

Edit: The 4870x2 gets beat most times by the GTX285, so the 1GB 4870 really offers no competition and should only be considered if money is an issue and only once you've upgraded the rest of your system.

Yeah, with your current CPU about the maximum that would make sense would be an HD 4670. It is totally dependent upon what you are going to pair the card with - CPU, monitor.

I think the GTX 285 runs around 73% more cost than a 4870 1GB, and the GTX 280 runs around 47% more cost. This is just from looking at Newegg prices. The performance for the buck might not be quite as good from the GTX 28x.

upgrade everything, including your monitor so it can game at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 and get This! Outperforms the 4870 and isn't too far from a gtx 285 because of this card be pre-OCed for you

I may have used the wrong wording, but I did say "upgrade the WHOLE system", although "replace the whole system" would've been better understood. ;)

And perhaps the other components (proc, mobo) might deserve a different thread, but at least I'm all set for a 22" monitor at least.

So in performance per cost ratio, and if the money saved isn't really an issue, I'll be better off with the GTX 285?

Did that wolf come with that processor?

¿?¿When did I miss that deal?¿?

OoOoOoOo! I get it! WOLFdale!

To op: Wait for the 4890, apparently it will give the 285 a run for its money.

An early April release of the RV790 (HD 4890) will mean (usually) an early May arrival here. late March, April-May and early June is summer break months over here so If I have to wait THAT long I've spent half of my break with my old computer.

And the price cut reported here, March 2 of 2009, just took effect this week, more than 2 weeks after.

Get a new board/cpu first. A 4870 in that case will just bottleneck. Even a cheap Athlon X2 4200+ or something would be better than nothing.

Sorry if I forgot to mention this properly, but I'll be replacing the whole system entirely.

This will MAY BE my new system:
MOST PROBABLY core i7-920, Asus P6T Deluxe, 6GB RAM (3x2GB), Antec casing, 750w PSU (or 850w), 2HDs (250GB + 750GB), 22x DVD-RW with LS
The choices are not yet final, and that will warrant another thread perhaps (the proc and mobo)

alright, have someone buy it in america (a mod, or someone with good heatware) and have them ship it to you, you wont be disappointed. Altogether, it wont cost but $20 for shipping, and plenty of people would do it for free (including me).
also a +1 if it includes heatware.

Im all for hooking people outside of the US up with our perks.

Ship which? The 4890? Well as I said I've waited too long already considering my system. Perhaps when the 4900 and GTX 300 series comes I'll take on the offer. ;)

You like that? :D My own idea and I had a friend make it for me. Not sure what to do when I put a quad in this system though, won't be running my wolfie anymore.

My fault man, I misunderstood you. Ok about getting the GTX285 or the 4870 1 gig. Personally I haven't used a 4870 myself, but I did have a GTX260, which is about equal in performance to the 1 gig 4870. Now currently I'm running a GTX280, which is just a hair under the GTX285 performance wise. From what I've seen performance wise with the cards I've had, $250 for a 4870 compared to $335 for a GTX285, I'd probably get a 4870 1 gig. Yes the GTX285 will be the better performing of the two, but is the gain worth a extra $85. Heh, probably not.
