My i7 920 runs 40-45c at idle and 65-70c at 100% using a C2D generation cooler (TT BigTyphoon VX) and is overclocked from 2.66ghz stock to 3.6ghz on everyday use. This CPU runs almost as cool as my old Opteron 165 which was oc to 2.8ghz.

fire up OCCT's linpack test, and see how the temps are

So far, I've have 5 core i7 chips, 3 CO's and now 2 DO's. They have been all over the map with temps. They are certainly hotter than any other chips I've owned. Though I would say it's relative to performance. For instance, my current DO runs mid 60's at 4.2ghz 1.26v on full load under water, and it will crush anything out there in benchmarks.

I can (and do) heat my entire room with my i7 + 2x GTX 285 setup, even at idle.
I had to take the duvet out of the sheets to get sleep, I was too hot (no way am I turning this sucker off :D).

That's why i7 begs for water cooling, or at least a TRUE.

I have a 3Ghz P4 running at 1.485v 4.2Ghz w/Ninja II, my Q9650 which ran 1.3v at 4Ghz w/u120x and currently runs 3.6Ghz at stock volts (1.2v) with a Q6700 stock cooler, and my i7 920 w/Mugen2 currently running 3.75Ghz at 1.18v.

The Core i7 is the hottest chip I've owned, bar none. I never had a P-D, so I wouldn't know to compare to that one (Especially the extreme models), but compared to a regular P4, the i7 is way, way, way hotter.

I was linpack stable at 4Ghz/1.3v with it when the weather was cooler and the aircon was on, but once the ambient temps rose to over 30c, it would no longer be the case and load temps were hitting 90c (Even with four fans on the Mugen2). Air cooling is just not sufficient in a hot, humid climate, for such volts on the i7 (And 1.3v isn't a high voltage, by any means !).

On my current 3.75Ghz/1.18v clocks it loads up to 65c while my Q9650 ran 56c loaded (4Ghz/1.3v) on my u120x with two Scythe S-Flex 1200RPM fans strapped on the tower. The 4.2Ghz P4 runs 60c loaded on the Ninja II with a pair of Thermaltake Cyclo 120mm fans (Noisy bastards). Considering the 3.6Ghz Q9650 with a stock cooler loads to 65c as well, you can see just how hotter my 920 is when compared to the Yorkfield quads, or the P4.

P4 Prescott runs HOT. The old AMD Barton chips ran hot as hell too. I frequently saw 75*C with my 3000+

damn. my barton 2600+ never hit 60C, even when OC'd past 3200+ speeds. (what was that again, 2.2GHz?)

yeah. 2.1GHZ is what mine ran at. I even had a thermaltake cooler on it.
