Frankly the download management built into Chrome, Vivaldi and FireFox gets the job done for me.

Are you very bandwidth limited or capped?

What are you seeking to achieve from using a download manager such as the ones you listed? Simply speed?

Frankly, if you want the best speed you want to minimize the amount of interfaces in between your PC and the download server, not increase them with extra software. All you're doing is utilizing more processing to do what your browser's download manager already can do, DM's don't really gain you anything anymore as server options are usually available for choice (like here on TPU) so you can choose a less congested server to download from, if available which is what you want to pay attention to when downloading files. Beyond that, download it be patient.

Yea, I would stay away from all of those. In the past the only real offer they had was the ability to pick back up if your connection was lost, but current web browsers will do that now. I prefer Opera's built in download management, but Firefox would be my next favorite... then Chrome.

I tried to download a Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and in browsers it was deadly slow, tried FDM and got the maximum download speed for my bandwidth.
So they make a difference, maybe it's greater for slower connections.


And FDM, which is the one I use, has no malware nor ads built-in

Really the only time they help is when you are downloading from a site that has a bandwidth limit in place for their downloads. So say you are downloading from a place that limits each download to 128KB/s(1Mb/s). The download manager gets around this by making multiple connections and downloading multiple chunks of the file at once. So if you have 5 chunks downloading at once your speed will jump to about 512KB/s(5Mb/s).

But sites have gotten smart to this. A lot of them that have per connection download speed limits, also limit the number of connections you can make at once. So download managers are not that effective anymore. There still are some times when they can be, but to me it isn't worth having another program installed, I just use the browser.

Many sites limit the number of connections but that was more in the past.
Some now you have to download a a dedicated downloader from the website/developer.
Some now use HTML5 for download (MEGA).
Some now use torrents.
Some use a temporal, unique link that expires and can't be reused and won't work outside a browser.

But still downloaders can be useful in some scenarios.

I wouldn't use them on a RG6, UTP, Fiber connection. I would only on a 33.6/56K Dial Up Connection, other than that its useless

those ISP's also tend to do DEEP PACKET INSPECTION of torrents when they find no infringing content they should allow those torrents
because your doing nothing illegal

Back in the day FlashGet was the king. Now Opera's built in manager is my favorite. Basically anything is better than Edge's download manager lol

Our local ISP is terrible at detecting Torrents, furthermore I don't THINK (although im sure its not something that they likely want to make TOO well known ) they have a monthly or any other type of bandwidth cap , luckily.

They certainly do monitor it to some degree here, but from what I remember it was particular content that they would flag/watch for. I was never to huge into torrenting, but if I recall correctly HBO content was a big no-no .... any of their content was a basic guarantee you get a little 4 x 4 post card telling you to stop torrenting,
