The worst mistake CA made was releasing Three Kingdoms after TWWH 1&2. There is so much more to do in those games vs 3K. For me there was also the fact that your generals die over time. I know that the games are Grand strategy but I totally agree with everything you said about the way the game feels and some of the idiosyncrasies.
Oh yes they die, and then you get stuck with the wrong classes for your retinue. Goodbye vanguard deployment for a whole army because you clicked next turn... I also do not like how these classrs limit unit choices at all. Basically there is only one meta that way: "whatever you can purchase"... stack the shallow unit roster on top and in many ways all factions feel the same after turn 50.
And on top of THAT... there is also the schoolyard style friendship/rivalry bullshit with non matching personalities. What is this, Three Sims?
Tbf, after that long playthrough I feel no urge to go back.
