I work with 3-D seismic for oil and gas exploration, generating multi-color mapping that looks similar to a colored weather map. I am currently still using the original Graphics card from 4 or 5 years ago, a Quadro 600. First of all, would a new GTX 1000 series card make that much of a difference for me to justify the cost? Secondly, if so, which card would be the best fit?

Thanks!

I just got off the phone with their support and they advise a Quadro but having said that the program uses mostly open GL 3 or higher as its muscles. GL

So which ever GPU is best at that would be best for you.

The first thing you need to do is make sure whether your software can support 1000-series CUDA.

Your software needs to be updated to take advantage of latest CUDA.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Sounds like you should be on the horn with the company asking these questions, not DRDNA...............(give a man a fish... teach a man to fish...you know.. :))

You would need to get a hit on someone that uses that software and has a 10 series card, which... big site and all, but, you won't find many which use the software here, I wouldn't imagine.

Ok, I'll do some more research and let you guys know. Thanks!

Regards,
We could spend up to $600- $700, but didn't know if the 1080 is that much better than the $250 1060.
The software I use is Geographix.

I was looking at the EVGA GTX 1060 and the 1080. Is the 1080 THAT much better than the 1060?

Oh, aye, 1080 rapes 1060 and then some.

Let's just say 1060 x 2 is 1080 for ease of understanding.

What about the 1070? What are your thoughts on this card? Would you suggest a different one in that price range?

For your budget, 1070 is probably ideal.

But money speaks here. The more money you spend, the better performance you will get along with more vRAM.

GeForce GTX are gaming grade chips,
you station have a Quadro, those are design and workstation oriented chips... i highly suggest you look for used Nvidia quadro cards on ebay... better performance, mostly if you have to squeeze the money by your own,

Gefroce GTX is indeed for gaming but the situation has changed - a lot - recently. Now, Geforce cards are being used for its CUDA capacity.

Why do you think I have 1060 in my rig? I use it for CUDA.

I used to work with Solidworks 3d Modeling software in 2011, back then I had a GTX580 which ran it fine even though Solidworks recommended the Quadro cards. I believe a GTX1080 would serve its purpose today for your needs rather than a Quadro...

1080TI will be out soon, might lower the prices on the 1070 and 80 and make them an even more attractive proposition.

Id just upgrade to a nicer quadro card.

M2000 or M4000 or wait for the P2000 and P4000.

A Quadro 600? Wow. That's ancient! Released in Dec 2010 BTW. Which is more than 6 years ago. And it was a low-end card even then.

Any 1000 series card is going to be LIGHT YEARS faster at anything.

A GTX 1060 6GB has 1398% performance relative to the Quadro 600.
A GTX 1070 has 1873% relative performance.
A GTX 1080 has 2210% relative performance.

I'd go as far to say an older Titan for its double-precision power and its still CUDA.

CPU doesn't matter much for CUDA computing. All CPU does is pass workload right to GPU. Your CPU will be fine.

Having said that, even 1060 will rape your Quadro 600 so many times that ... it ain't funny.
