Which GTX 1080 model to buy?

OP, I'd lean toward the Asus Strix but the MSI would be a close second for me.

Full GPUs without disabled parts are somewhat rare atm because of the new fabrication nodes (16/14nm). Thats true for the GP104 as well as Polaris10. That's why you can easily get a 1070, but not a 1080, RX 480 or GTX 1060.

i almost feel like the 1080 is not a real desktop part -- im reading the reviews and there is very little to separate between the cards - they cap the card artificially and they even cram them in laptops and the chips perform identically... the difference between something like the EVGA classified and any other custom card is practically nil.

Relly doesnt seem to matter which one anyone goes with (barring any fan/bios issues).

Yep, they all end up at the same wall no matter how many extra bells and whistle they put on them so it's really down to either brand loyalty or price.

My recommendation would just be to make sure it has aftermarket, better cooling.

In my opinion you can save yourself some cash and go for the Palit 1080 Game Rock, it is a really good card.

I have the same card, even cranked full 100% fan noise is still pretty quiet but then fans only max out a 3000rpm.

I bought an A8G and flashed it to the O8G using a modified nvflash and the BIOS from the review sample on TPU (though the plain one might work with the -6 flag as the models have different subsystem IDs). I then overclocked it to +50 core and +450 memory with no voltage increase in MSI Afterburner and so far so good, gets 67.7 FPS on Unigine Valley at 2560*1440 and maximum/ultra settings (my 1468MHz Zotac Extreme 980 got 39 FPS) and temperatures never exceed 68c with the default fan profile (up to 53% fan speed/1920 RPM from what I noticed). Definitely a good buy!
