I’ve narrowed down my choices between MSI, Asus, and EVGA. The ones I’m looking into are MSI GTX 980Ti Gaming 6G, Asus GTX 980Ti Strix, EVGA GTX 980Ti SC+ ACX 2.0+.

Zotac would be a good option which has already been mentions and for the Asus GTX 980Ti Strix there is a overclocked variant which might be better if you prefer the factory overclock as well as a few more variants.
Given a lot of those graphics cards are good you could go by either brand of motherboard or overall colour scheme for your PC build in relation to which card you want to choose.
Functionality and performance wise most of them are very close.

It went very well! I just grabbed the most recent Amp! Extreme BIOS from the database and flashed the Omega, with the Windows version of nVflash.
On the stock bios, it wouldn't boost above the advertised boost.
With the Extreme BIOS, it boosts to 1404 @ 1.185v.

Yes, these cards are inexpensive when compared to the others. I'm 'extreme'ly (lol) happy with this card.
The Omega and the Extreme share the same cooler and PCB. The only difference is clocks and the Omega doesn't come with the LEDs.

So I got Omega too in the end. And now I flashed mine as well, I tested a bit in MSI AB to see my card limit and it seems to be the same as yours default voltage @ 1.187v >> 1405mhz, 1417mhz would crash in something like new TombRaider with SSAA.. Then I manually adjusted few parameters in Maxwell bios tweaker to match Extreme version (power limit, ram OC, adv boost table)..

Also disabled that auto fan off feature, set min 28% until 40C and then raised 70C limit to 74C or it would get a little loud around 62C (60 -65%) vs default auto setting which seems to hoover ~ 67-68C (~50-55%) by really demanding games. Now its usually 55-60% max and 60-62C.

Anyway, have you tried to OC it manually further? or tested its max OC? What is your max voltage, is it same as mine 1.23v? even though bios shows up to 1.28v.

What ASIC is your chip? Mine is 72% and it appears as if I hit gpu wall at 1480mhz be it 1.21 or 1.23v... Sadly 1500mhz is out of reach for me :-\ so idk am I still hitting gpu powerlimit wall or not, when I oc above 1480mhz I could see red dots here and there..
