Hi, I have two HDD, and I am going to give one away but want to keep the better and faster one. Should I keep the Maxtor : Maxline Plus II ATA/133 HDD or the Western Digital: WD2500JB - 00FUA0. The reason I ask is because I can't find descriptions for the Western Digital drive if it is actually 133mbs.

Please Help.

Thanks

Looks like the WD is ATA/100 (ATA-5)

umm ... I googled "Western Digital WD2500JB specs" and then clicked on the WDC page for the drive.
No charge ... lol

Thanks, I did the exact same thing but added the numbers and letters at the end, are you not suppose to add the numbers and letters at the end? Isn't that important?

Thanks

It doesn't really matter.
You know the Maxtor is 133. The WD is either 100 or 133 (but we're not 100% positive)
They are both 7200rpm and 250GB drives.
So keep the one you are sure about. :)

Ok, thanks.

I just found a description of the same drive on eBay, and you are right.

Much thanks. :toast:

I'd keep the WD. The Maxtor has either very limited number of reviews or very bad reviews. Performance wise, they'll be similar so I'd take the most likely to be reliable.

Both drives could only manage about 80 MB/s sequential read on the outermost edge of the platter so the interface speed isn't very important (100 or 133, it is more than adequate).

I always find the discussion of reliability interesting.
In my own experience managing networks, I've had more WD failures than either Maxtors (before they were owned by Seagate) or Seagates.
I usually end up pitching working old Seagates and Maxtors because of that lack of capacity, not because they failed.

I know that others have had exactly the opposite experince and swear by WD.

Oh well ... perhaps "luck of the draw" as they say.

It could be noise related or DOA too.

I've been pretty lucky with all brands of HDDs (number of deaths relative to the number of drives).

I've always had good luck with Maxtor And lately with WD. Now A few years ago I had a bad dealing with WD. and swore them off. But As my older drives are well really friggin old and are starting to developed bad sectors I have been replacing them and some of the replacements have been Wd and have worked great.

Maxtor's were tanks until seagate bought out the company. I have had so many seagates die on it, its unreal!

BUT! maybe its my luck :(

Thanks everyone,
Based on FordGT90Concept, a couple of comments from you guys, I guess I will keep the WD, These drives are going to be used solely as storage through an IDE controller. Just wanted to see which one would transfer my files fastest from my OS drive.

Greatly appreciated!!! :)
