So I installed the UNi Xonar 1807 v1.62 beta 1. Is that correct and there are a lot of setting any recommendations. Also I have the Klipsch Pro audio 2.1 speakers that have a headphone jack in them. I'm using that any problems there?

use the headphone out on the sound card. make sure ASIO is installed. click the HF button in the control panel. select ASIO in whatever media player you use. don't worry about HP Advance settings when using headphones. it's just a gain setting.

OmniStar80, have you bought the soundcard yet>? I'd say it depends what kind of money you are able to spend and what is the intended use. For example: for my parents PC I got a second-hand Creative X-fi Music, which is pretty cheap, but for Skype and other VOiP communication and movies is perfect. I have never experienced the notorious problems with drivers. Right now I am using laptop and I have paired it with Creative X Fi go PRO!, and to be honest if you are not gaming, it's not worth it that much. I'd say wait for a while. The new Creative cards are almost out: http://www.techpowerup.com/170546/Creative-Introduces-the-Sound-Blaster-Z-Series-Sound-Cards.html unless you get a pretty good deal second-hand or something similar.

alexa is also making expanded drivers, you should watch out for those, they will be for all xonar cards.

you know I have the x-fi go and x-fi notebook(2 of these, got one for free), and they both sound worst than the codec on my laptop, so I believe you koce

ASIO stands for audio stream input output. it's a protocol that bypasses Windows and communicates directly with the sound card or DA converter for fast, bit-perfect playback. this is how video game developers are able to squeeze so much out of consoles because the language communicates directly with the hardware unlike a Windows PC.

asio also limits you to exclusive mode so no playing mp3s and playing battlefield 3 at the same time unless EA decides to add asio support
when on windows WASAPI > ASIO
asio is for audio professionals its to much of pain in the ass to be usable for everyday use

I was considering a Xonar DS for $33 on MIR when I discovered my GTS 250's HDMI will not properly pass through audio. The DS has DTS Connect and it's about the most affordable card that does. I decided to ditch that idea when I found some were getting lossless 5.1 PCM through their more modern GPUs with HDMI.

So what 5.1 audio formats does that inexpensive DG offer for PC gaming? I assume since it doesn't encode DD or DTS, it must do some kind of sim surround like Pro Logic II or something.

the Xonar DG/X can't do Dolby Digital 5.1 over digital but it can still access those 6 channels over analog. if your Yamaha receiver had multi-channel analog input you would be in business...

Actually I was only curious how those of you whom have them use them. As I stated I won't need a sound card using HDMI on a more modern GPU. I'm currently considering this one.

I wasn't even aware until today that EVGA was making non ref air cooled video cards.
