well if am not able to get this 4400+

I bought it but it could be sold out . For the money is it better to buy this bad boy as a single core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539

of the 3800+ manchester.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562

it appear the 3700+ sandy is an uderclocked fx chip and is 50 dollars cheaper

also I do have a Vencie core 3000+ 2.43 ghz running at a little better than a 3800+ Venice core chip
will I see a big difference, and if so the sandy is only around a hundred bucks and if I sell my 3000+ the difference is only 50.00. im not sure what is best here just kicking around ideas.

I'd say, no it wouldn't be a huge difference. With prices on duiallies so cheap, why not... if you can't get the 4400, why not get the 3800+ X2?

OTOH, getting a Sandy isn't a bad idea either, just as a toy... you know... in the interest of science. to see how fast you can get it :D

Not a bad choice at all!

I would have saved $75 and gone with the 3800+. But, the 4400 would have been my second choice. Let us know how it OC's. BTW, that's a much better deal than the Opty 165 IMO. 11x multiplier gives you much greater flexibility when OC'ing. Because of my 9x on my Opty I'm stuck at 2.466 GHz

Regarding the whole L2 cache thing, yeh I didn't read the flame war there, but it does have a ~2-10% impact overall, IIRC. Extra cache on the Intel Conroes has a little more of an impact, because of the memory controller design etc.

No flame war! were actually buddies, just a healthy difference of opinion.

Agreed, 110% - but, if you read thru them? You'll see points & counter-points, etc. et al, & can gain by it all imo @ least...

:)

(I even pose a question to myself on my edit... would like feedback on it, regarding L2 cache pollution & prevention of it, via soft affinity sets (taskmgr.exe) & multithreaded code on an SMP/DualCore rig!).

APK

P.S.=> It really DOES all boil down to how you plan to use a system though... as usual! If you're a gamer SOLELY or mostly on a PC? This says wonders (pictures are worth a 1,000 words):

http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?...s&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=225&page=2

Especially it's concluding paragraph (& considering that is BETA debug code results (faster in final builds for reasons I give/cite above as fact))... apk

Damn alec, your posts are huge and hard to read!

I think you need to work on sentence and paragraph structure. If you wrote bigger single paragraphs your posts wont look so intimidating. :p

They are, & maybe hard to grasp for some folks, I do get technical, but usually do back every point with corresponding findings.

Quotes help bloat them, but it keeps points in reply, right to the point quoted.

Naw, 1 set of photos pretty much says it all for me, in regard to some points I contended with here!

SMP/DualCore + Multithreaded designed apps in Win32 today... AND, in GAMING, no less + the massive improvement the 2 both combined can yield (if done right)!

ATI Side

Another picture, worth a 1,000 words:

NVidia Side

:)

The L2 cache stuff... still wondering & would like feedback on my questions regarding it!

APK

P.S.=> There is an effect known as "cache pollution" that CAN be 'offset' to a large degree & help improve L2 cache efficacy!

(I've written about it here before in the Folding@Home thread in the GENERAL SOFTWARE section)

The way to do that? Use Taskmgr.exe "processor affinity" settings BY PROCESS, to stop new code from entering into a particular CPU core's L2 cache, upsetting a process' cache purity (for lack of a better term here) & its already cached data &/or code resident there...

You can get more info., validating my statement above, here:

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/...3873/3873.html

& here (more technical in nature):

http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~cam84/osIIsI.txt

"Processor Affinity - Each process saves which processor it was run on last and if it is possible the same processor will be used for it's next scheduled CPU time to help cache locality."

That's done typically in STRICTLY explicitly coded SMP programs, via API calls like Win32's "SetProcessAffinity" after detection of 2-N actual CPU's present... on multithreaded code, the OS process scheduler manages this & is being improved upon by MS in VISTA especially, & imo, in regards MOSTLY to cache pollution stoppage... apk

EDIT PART - now, I will question myself!

And, it has to do w/ multithreaded code on SMP rigs...

Will this cache pollution measure I use (weak one imo, a rig job vs. hard affinity settings, this is soft affinity afaik)... does it hold true on multithreaded code? I know it will on single threaded processes, but not sure on SMP!

Not sure, would like feedback! apk

Well the 4400+ was sold out and the 3800X2 im not sure is as cheap as it can get im going for the single core sandy for now and im going to overclock it as high as I can. It appears like some people have gotten it to 2.7 or higher for me this will have to do for now. If I sell my 3000+ im only out about 50 buck and at 105.00 a 3700+ sandy which will run like a fx 53 is a big jump from my 3000+. Im hoping it will play the newer games when they come out. When the 3800x2 hits the 100 dollar mark I will sell this one and move up. I have a feeling that it was fate that my order got canceled on the 4400+ I bet it falls to 150.00 by christmas if there isn't a shortage of them. If there is then I will get the 3800x2 or the 4600x2 Thx to all who posted I must have changed my mind fifty times. If you post quick I might still have time to cancel this order and make a new one LOL.

If you can get it to 2700 plus it will play any game in the forseeable future coupled with decent grafix of course. When those multithreaded games come out more regular it will still play them just wont get the framerates that the duals will acheive. Have you thought about the 4200??? I get mine to 2800 stable and they are great buys at the moment....cheaper than the 4400 just a little less cache which in MOST games makes little or no difference (well about 2%).

As an after thought I looked up a e6300 or conroe chips yes they are cheap but my god motherboards for the thing are crazy and looking at the bench marks 4200+,4400+,4600+ seem to almost match or exceed it and you can find motherboards as low as 45 dollars.
