At work, they are selling off all their old PC's for $25 a pop.
I wanted to hop on this "deal" and get the most bang for my buck.

The first choice has a Intel Pentium 4 processor @ 3.0 ghz
with an Intel 82945G Express Chipset Video Card

The second, an Intel Celeron 440 @ 2.00 Ghz
with an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Video Card.

The pentium 4 is faster, but isn't the Celeron Newer? I don't know a lot about these old CPU's so any info would be great!
Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate the feedback!

Celeron easily.

Heres why:

  • The Celeron is Conroe Based. So it is faster per clock than the P4 which is netburst based. I would think at 2.0GHz it would be close to the same performance level as the 3.0GHz P4.
  • The G31 chipset is much better than the 945 chipset.
  • The G31 motherboard should support at least Core 2 Duo, maybe even Quad, processors. So it has much better upgrade options.
  • The Celeron PC could probably be upgraded to a decent gaming machine, assuming it has a PCI-E slot for a dedicated graphics card. The P4 machine will never be good at much more than a office PC.

Screw you and your editing :( lol

The later celerons like the 440 are based on the core2 architecture unlike the old crappy netburst architecture like the pentium 4. And the G33 chipset is a lot newer than the 945.

Completely borked my post now aswell :( lol

Celeron 440, for the reasons already mentioned above.

Just to add something to the discussion: I had a P4 overclocked to 4.2Ghz, and I toyed with a Celeron 440 overclocked to 3.3Ghz (on the cheapest Biostar G31 motherboard I could find, too). In benchmarks the Celeron 440 was around 15-20% faster as far as number crunching went. You don't even want to imagine the difference in temperatures and power consumption between the two CPUs at their OC settings, either.

Screw you lol, I used partial quote this time  I kinda figured that after the last one so made sure I didn't do it again

And to the OP I reckon that celeron will clock to 3.6ghz easily, though might be a push getting it there with that board, should be good for 3ghz I would imagine :toast:

Not bad for $25

The first choice has a Intel Pentium 4 processor @ 3.0 ghz
with an Intel 82945G Express Chipset Video Card

The second, an Intel Celeron 440 @ 2.00 Ghz
with an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Video Card.

OK, so I found 1 (one!) PC here that has an AMD 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ @ 2.81 ghz
with an NVidia Quadro NVS 210s

Is it safe to assume that this would be the ideal choice if given the option?
How does it compare to the Celeron? Thanks again!

It is definitely better than the Celeron performance-wise (At stock settings it is probably the equivalent of a pair of Celeron 440s and a bit more). Depending on the board its upgrade options might be more limited, though (The board might not accept any AM2+/AM3 CPUs, while the G33 board most likely will take just about Core 2 CPU).

Bottom line: If you just plan on grabbing another cheap comp and use it as is, I'd take the 5600+ based system. If you want a low power home-server or something, the Celeron will definitely use less power. The P4 loses on all counts.

Nice, it will spank the celeron at multithreaded apps and I would imagine be a bit ahead of it in single threaded apps to. Don't get too excited about the Quadro its an old card based off the NVIDIA 6 series

The Athlon X2 is definitely the better choice as is right now. But the G31 motherboard will probably support better processors.

I think I'd take the Athlon X2 though, because the G31 board probably doesn't support any overclocking functions, assuming it is a pre-built, so I'd replace that anyway. However, the processor in the X2 rig is better already, and I would need to replace that while I would replace the Celeron.

yea, these are old Dell Optiplex's

P4's are the Optiplex GX620's

The Celerons are the Optiplex 360's

AMD machine is an Optiplex 740

For only $25 each, buy both!! In fact, buy another one and ship it my way... the gf could use one after losing her job and having to turn in her work laptop which I was always having to work on anyway. $25 is cheap for all the OC'ing fun those could be if you can get around the Dell BIOS.

Heck for $25 it may even be worth replacing the board($35 or cheaper) just to OC these.

Snag the optiplex 740. It's a good machine and will run circles around the celeron. Also since they are Dell machines, overclocking the celeron processor will be more difficult. You'd probably have to BESL mod the chip to get any more MHz, simply because the Dell bios will not have any oc features.

haha yea, too bad we're limited to one each and it's done by raffle :S.. but I'd definitely send one your way if you wanted to pay for shipping.
I was the one who replaced everyone's pc's with the new ones (i7's!!!) so I think I shouldn't have a problem getting first dibs.. they were talking about donating them to some children's organization which is still up in the air, but I think I'll still be able to grab at least one >:D
