Which PSU to go with XFX 9600GT?

Hi guys

I'm looking to get the XFX 9600 GT ( reference specs ). This is very much a budget buy, but still a huge step up from my current 8500 GT.

But, my question is, which of the following two PSU's should I buy? Please not that these two derivatives are the only ones available to me. And yes, I have checked the PSU help thread, but I thought I'll ask just to be sure...so here goes:

1) COOLERMASTER EXTREME POWER 460W or

2) GIGABYTE® ODIN 470W

According to the PSU help thread the gigabyte's quality is a bit suspect tho...

Please give me some good info ( hopefully from personal experience ? )

neither of those PSU's is what one would call quality.
9600 is low power enough it shouldnt matter.

the coolermaster has more power on the 12V rails, i'd be choosing it.

COOLER MASTER EXTREME POWER 460W is more reliable and good enough to power 9600 GT + Quad Core (in future for upgrade). I am also gonna buy it soon for my config (also want to upgrade to 9600GSO or 9600GT or 4670)

400W is enough...

or corsair VX450...

I'm using a crappy 430W PSU with my 9600GT en Pentium D...
works just fine...

tbo I would go with around a 600watt psu. That way if you upgrade or decide to go with sli later you will beable to support two 9600gt's with no issues. Just me thinking about ya future

thing is, its a bit of a mission to get it to CT, so I've went ahead and orderd both the XFX 9600gt and the coolermaster to go with it.

Ok. They do ship though.

Maybe look to save up for a really good one later.
A good 520 or 550W would be worth the investment in the long run.

Just be aware the CM's are noisy. My 650W was relegated to the workbench as soon as I could replace it.

EDIT: My bro is running that gfx card. Good card.

Does he have the XFX one? if so have you clocked it a bit? and how far could you go?

Also, a little extra noise won't kill me I've got some high rpm 80mm fans in my case already and it doesn't bother me. as long as more noise equals more performance I'm good with it :laugh:

He does. No overclock at this point though. But he's pleased as punch with it. We got it on special last year for R1200 at Rage.

a real 400w would be just enough
maybe a corsair i don't know if there's a 400w version but u could get the 450w one :]
betwen the those two posted i use the Gigabyte460w on my backup rig for almost 4 months and it works like it should

i've got a corsair 400w psu and its powering my sparkle 9600GT overclocked and my E6320 core 2 duo cpu overclocked to 2.8ghz and its running great for me

I was going to say either of those PSUs would have been fine although I would've leaned more towards the Coolermaster.

Get OC'ing on your new gpu

I run mine at 780/1950 and have OC'd to 800/2000 for benching (although it's an alphadog edition) Make sure you watch those temps (increase the fan)

Pretty much any PSU over 400 watts should run a 9600 GT fine, but it you want headroom for overclocking and upgrading, and don't want to spend more money on a power supply that failed (which incidentally could take your whole rig down as well), then look at your price range and find some reviews on PSUs out there.
You said noise doesn't bother you, so don't worry about reading the noise reports in reviews, look for the quality!

I've got a crappy Omni 500 watt PSU running my rig, and it seems to do alright. No 6-pin PCI-E connector though, so I have to use up two molex 12v connectors (which I could be running fans from).
