He is talking about items like this and the embedded AMD polaris parts that are 95W TDP setups.

I strongly strongly doubt that. Having seen in person my younger brothers XFX XXX edition card consume 30-60w less than mine and it is just a mid tier version. I assume they are just buying the best consumer bins AMD will sell them.

Now mind you these number do NOT align with MSI afterburner which is what Jay used to test his card (typically this reads a full 100w more), but this card eats some wattage.

As I was saying, Jay's chip was drawing around 85W at 1288Mhz, and the Polaris Radeon E9550 has a TDP of up to 95W, so since we aren't seeing any other consumer cards with such low power, his chip must be an E9550 grafted onto a GTR board.

That's thing according to afterburner which is what Jay used to show power consumption that's not far off what my brothers card consumes. In fact depending how I set my card to throttle I am getting mine closer and closer to that number using wattman.

Hello guys, i wanna get a rx 480 for 1080p gaming and my monitor is 120 hz also. I m between Asus strix and msi gaming x. They say better things about msi but asus is also 15 dollars cheaper and have 1 more year warranty than msi one. And also i wanna ask if 8 gb is needed? I mostly play mmo games like WoW. I be happy if u help me decide plz thank you.
I can only choose between rog strix oc and gaming x actually. Asus has 1 more year warranty and on my country its warranty service is really good. You can say performance wise there is any difference or those samsung micron vram problem aplies in these rx r80 models also?
This thread has been off-topic since the first page. Above is the OP's first post and then a follow up post. Keep on topic or move on. Only warning.

Well, I'd say avoid both of those two cards and here is why:

The ASUS is a quality build but if you ever have a problem their customer service is simply awful.

The MSI uses a 3rd party BIOS Flash to change between clockspeed modes, rather than a physical switch.

A big question to ask yourself is; do you plan on manually overclocking?

If not, the highest factory clocks are on the Sapphire Nitro+ 8GB with 1342Mhz. Also, it has Dual BIOS chips with a physical switch to change modes. The dual BIOS is important because if there is an error in the BIOS, you have a back-up, especially if you want to try a custom BIOS.

Many on here like the XFX GTR, as do I. However the factory clock is just silly at 1288Mhz, which is barely over the reference 1266Mhz.

If you do want to manually OC, some have had great results overclocking these, leading some to believe they are getting better binned chips as you can see from the discussion.

I would go with the Nitro+ if you do not want to manually overclock, but if you do OC, I think both the Sapphire Nitro+ and the XFX GTR are what you should choose between depending on the price you find.

@thesmokingman
I posted links, but you choose not to look at them, which is why you are confused.

Sapphire NITRO+ RX 480 8 GB. At 1342 MHz it has the fastest boost clock and it's cheaper than Asus, MSI and similar competitors. It's even faster that XFX RX480 GTR Black Edition. :)

Although, it's way too soon to replace R9 390. You will not see much difference with RX480.

@dassan
Oh wait!
I didn't understand you currently have the R9 390!
Komshija is correct that the RX 480 will not be a significant upgrade, save your money and wait for AMD VEGA.

I wouldn't since AMD VEGA plans to compete at the GTX 1070 level and beyond, and since AMD is future proofing for the new APIs.
