so was considering the 3060ti to hold me off but I dont think it will satisfy my needs.

looking at 3070 but mostly would like a 3080. it will hold me off for at least 6-8

im still rocking a gtx660 970 and rx 590 in 3 other pc.

but im curious are there known brands or models of 3080 that have whine?

I saw a guy selling a galax sg which said in a review it has whine. my misophonia would drive me nuts with it are there others you know or own that have coil whine?

thanks in advance

You buy whatever you want, test it in your system and return it if it is too whiny for you. That is why you have that 14 days return window. If you buy second hand, ask the seller to test it out, tell him you will not buy it if it's too loud, and if he agrees then meet up and do the deal.

It's a lottery but I've noticed OC models or what you'd call premium ones like Strix/suprim seems to more commonly have it.

All gpus have inducter coils so they can all have it. Some of this comes down to being able to hear specific frequencies and how clean the power being delivered is but mostly is still a lottery.

One method of usage that seems to emphasize coil whine in my GPUs is low-load high-FPS games/tests. My favorite to test with is 3DMark Night Raid or Wild Life. 400-1000+ fps really brings out the whine in my cards that have that tendency. However in games only delivering 60-144 fps, those same cards are mostly silent.

Any card can have coil whine. And some will only exhibit it in very specific situations.
If you want a go-to method that seems to work - just load any game where the main menu still has SOME load on the render engine, but it’s low, and uncap the framerate. Do note that some games cap the framerate to 60 in menus themselves, like modern Blizzard games. FF XIV is one such example where I consistently can get most cards to exhibit at least a bit of whine, even those that are silent otherwise.

Yes that's the one, remember this is to test worst case scenario. Interesting I've only even gotten 3DMark thru Steam, didn't even know there was a standalone version. I've had no coil whine in these tests on some GPUs and then some GPUs that whine in these tests but rarely if ever when gaming and then some which are pretty bad in these tests and yeah, it a lot quieter but still there in most general gaming.

I have an open testbench right now so if there's even a shred of coil whine, I'll hear it.

truthfully I hear in some videos showing some whine but theres more hiss from the gain they probably used to amplify the sound in edit to hear it. not sure how pronnounced it will really be. usually im running 5 other fans in the case so not sure how much it will bother me. if its a high pitched whine like a an 80's car turbo or a whine like a dodge charger supercharger or even like an ev car, that will really piss me off. but if its a whirring sound similar to fans, then its fine. not too high pitched and if its consistent its better then revving up and down.

thats the annoying high pitched kind I cant stand. if its a deeper sounding whirring whine, im fine with that. but high pitched would drive my misophonia crazy. I cant even stand beeps on things. opened all my appliances in the kitchen and ripped out the beeping modules. the worst offender is the microwave. it just keeps beeping after its done. every few minutes. nope. my phone too is on silent for years. no rings dings, vibration motor disabled. my senses are way over the normal person.

many "examples" if you search coil whine tuf. not all are legit and the gain is amplified. theres more hiss then whine in the videos. as long as it gets camflouged with the other fans, im good. but high pitched...that bich godago.

Every card and every brand can have coilwhine, sometimes a new PSU will fix or introduce it. Its mostly a lottery. Return the card if you are not happy. Most cards only have coilwhine if you uncap fps and runs in the 500-1000+ range.

If you google xx card + coilwhine and see one brand or model named more than others, its typically just because that card sold in huge numbers.

Evga didn't in that regard if you look at the 3080 ftw models.

I binned a few and got lucky with all of them.

The second hand market was full of asus 3080s and 3090s (all modells). So i only would buy one if you can hear it before money changes hands.

But those are Ada cards, not a 3080

None of that on my Zotac and EVGA that are running.

Best piece of advice that I can give is to turn you're case fans up a bit..

Or more volume to the headphones :D

The only GPU I remember whining noticeably was my Gigabyte GTX 470 SOC which I had 10+ years ago. Otherwise a great card but damn that coil whine.

Fyi:
hdmi 2.1 was a bit wonky with 3000 gen. But only if you've turned everything on together: 4k, 120Hrz, 4.4.4, VRR and HDR

And please listen to the Vram worries expressed here.

10-12 Gb sounds like much today...

I had issues with a screen shutting off for 2 seconds when the dryer in another room would turn one direction, then turned off for 2 seconds again when it went back. all the time it was running. it was on hdmi. I switched to DP and since then for like 5 months, not once.

annoyed the hell out of me when playing a game. it alays seems to turn off in critical times when you need to be careful of getting killed. and then it flashed off and I got killed. nice

I think its likely a lottery, if there is common reports of one model, it doesnt necessarily mean its prone to it, manufacturing processes also get refined, so even if there was a pattern, its not assured in the long term.

I dont think I have ever owned a GPU with noticeable coil whine, only a motherboard.

It's also technically not a defect and won't effect the performance or longevity of the card. It's just annoying.

Bottom line though anything with inductors can whine it's just more common with GPU's becuase they are high power devices the second most common is power supplies, but I've even heard motherboards with high power cpu's do it in rendering loads but very uncommon.

In my case it happened when the board was idle, or under network load. So it would happen when fans were quiet. Luckily not using the board now, was my Z370 board. I did discover C-states made it worse so I ran it inefficiently with only C1 for idle.

Funny you say that the majority of boards I remember doing it were Z390 which is similar.
