Who here played Resident Evil 7? Any fans of the original series?

So i will put this very bluntly, i dislike RE7 as an "RE" title, it's just not RE at all, and nothing felt like it went back to it's roots like so many say it does.
Here is a retrospective of 1-3 i could do my own write up but i agree with this guys video on those games.

And i like this one by Mack.

100% scripted game?
Poor PC controls?
Bad graphics?
Glitches?

I am a huge fan of the original 3 games. How huge? I bought the original on the Playstation, then I bought the Directors Cut, then I bought the Directors Cut Dual-Shock Edition, I bought RE2 on the playstation, then I bought RE2 Dual-Shock Edition. After the 3rd one, I thought the games sucked.

Now, I have to say I like RE7. I'm not going to say I love it, it definitely isn't as good as the first 3, but compared to all the other games that came after RE3, RE7 is by far the best and the closest to giving me that feeling of the downright creepiness of the original games.

As you pointed out, there are some flaws. Some of those can be argued like Bad Graphics and Poor PC Controls. I'd 100% disagree with those. The game looked good, and even with lower settings it looked good and run on rather weak hardware too. The controls aren't bad either, I didn't have any problem with them.

Now, as for 100% scripted, I think you have to go replay the old games. Pretty much all the events in those were 100% scripted as well. All the surprises, were 100% scripted. I mean, that is how the game was. Once you played through it once, you knew exactly what when and were something was going to happen.

Picking up stuff that has no use was also part of the original games. No so much the first one, but the second and third for sure. It was part of the puzzle elements, there were things in the game that had no use, and were only there to throw you off. Hell, I remember having a chest full of crap by the end of RE3, it was ridiculous.

One of the biggest things I dislike about RE7 is how linear it is. The first game had you going back and forth through the mansion, and the second through the PD, to get things and solve puzzles. I feel that is still greatly missing from RE7.

I loved the first three RE games, finished RE4 and RE5, stopped midway at 6 and never played 7 (although i watched most of it on the internet already and friends playing it)

RE 7 was creepy and scary but relies too much on it's first person up and close camera as well as the confined spaces to be scary imo. i loved the first 3 more because of the fixed camera angles and my character is more capable to handle enemies and the big settings they are in, especially in RE 2 and 3. also I liked the plot of the first three better

RE4 was kinda close to the first 3 games but added more action-packed stuff. RE5 and RE6 was the least scary and most action-packed out of all, and it also reduces the scariness when it's coop, even if your partner is an AI.

The style of the old games are rather a reminder to me of the good days, so possibly due to that, and my fear of change, I prefer the older games. Yes, the controls were like trying to control a tank, and the graphics were cheesy (but at that time, awesome), but overall I liked them. Games of that caliber were fun. Scary especially. Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, 0, Code Veronica, Evil Dead Hail to the King, Dino Crisis, etc, all fantastic games in my opinion. When they went to the whole action pack method that it was with 4, 5 and 6 - I was very upset. RE7 on the other hand looks like it tried to bring back the scariness of the older Resident Evils while trying to be new. I think they also tried to cash in on the jump scare concept (as stated above, with the close quarters and the FPS view) of that found in Amnesia games and their ripoffs. I can't comment cause I never actually played it. But when I first looked at it, the first thought that came off of my head was Resident Evil Survivor. I know, not the same thing. But whatever. Just talking nonsense I guess.

The scene set and the atmosphere works in RE 7 i will give it that, but everything else it crumbles to bits for me. I am glad you got a good experience out of the game though!

The pace, the scripting, and most of the other stuff that @newtekie1 pointed out really is true to the roots of this franchise.

You may experience it differently, but then honestly that is the effect of time on judgement.

What stuck with me most with RE7 however is the absolutely horrifyingly strong dialogue and voice actors, the twisted family you get to meet, and the 'ending' that draws itself out a bit longer than you had expected initially (that's as far as I'll go to prevent spoiling).

What I disliked: the length of it. I honestly didn't boost through, I took it extremely slow and re-checked every nook and cranny for secrets, and completing the game took just over 8 hours... That's just weak. This ties in closely with the difficulty level. Its surprisingly easy and rather forgiving and there are checkpoints everywhere. Every new mechanic is introduced in a timid way and the route through it is usually filled with items to ease the pain. New enemies, similarly, they do surprise you that first time... but they never really get under your skin the way they should. Simply because its too easy to get past them even if you screw up royally.

Graphics wise? I think it hits home perfectly. Controls? No problems whatsoever on mouse/KB. In a positive sense, the graphics are good (mind you, only at the highest internal render resolution though), but the attention to small details and cool assets is remarkable. News papers with eye catching headlines, or opening the door of the refrigerator in the kitchen of the smaller house for the first time... that really did tickle my enthusiasm for the game, and the sound design on top of that really does get a nice, desperate mood going.

I'll be honest, after the very slow start of this game I stopped realizing this was an RE game for a good while, up until the first mutated baddy came along. It was more of a classic US Hollywood hillbilly horror of sorts that I immersed in. And it does that perfectly.

Last but not least... this is the ONLY game that I got my girl interested in playing. She played the first couple hours/sequences of the game.

I never played any Resident Evil apart from RE2 which was horrifying, but not because of theme, but because of god awful clumsy controls and broken graphics. RE7 was interesting experience. I hated some parts, mostly dumb illogical stuff with bosses and certain monsters, but then again I was playing it on hardest difficulty. I also hated the monsters in a way, those black blobs were not exactly inspiring or diverse enemies.

I'd frankly prefer a Prey (2017) style Resident Evil where you dive into the Hive research complex from Resident Evil movie. I want highly interactive world that is exciting to explore. And Hive would be perfect for that. Objects manipulation adds to immersion and first person is more direct experience than looking over character's shoulder.

I enjoyed 7 nearly as much as 4 and pretty much skipped those in between even though I've got most of them on steam.

Obviously the first 3 were the best and defined resident evil, 4 changed the game style though I still enjoyed it on its own merits and finished it and still enjoy playing it from time to time, to me 7 was a bit like 4 in that sense, definitely not original resident evil but a good enough game on its own merits so much so I enjoyed playing through it and completing the game.

I own re7 but I haven't played it yet other than the Demo, but I did enjoy the demo. I really liked RE1 and I played a little of RE2, but it never sparked my interest. I think I was to caught up in quake 2 TF or half-life to play RE2. I tried re5 a few years ago, but didn't like it. I prefer left 4 Dead's game play and graphics. I do have to say the re7 demo gave me that feeling of RE1. I mainly bought it just in case RE7's VR part came to pc from PSVR. It had a year exclusive deal for PSVR, but it ended in Feb. They just haven't said anything yet.
