Except for the physics. It's not used that much in current games, is it? Care to guess why?

And sure, graphics aren't that amazing...yet. It's still early days. Most of that should have been realtime, rather than CG like past generations. PC will always have early hardware compared to consoles...it just may not be able to properly use it. And this time, really, what the consoles have isn't out yet. 128-bit CPUs? Where? Jaguar is 128-bit.

I guess we will have to wait and see. Normally first generation games don't look as good as future generations games. That's a given. However first generation games of a NEW console have historically blown away the last generation console games. Nothing I saw in that demo wowed me. Sony and MS both said they were not going to have as massive a jump this time in graphics as they did last time. They didn't think the market needed it.

Now I took that as strategic positioning at first but, then I was reading how some developers were parroting those positions and were saying expect texture bump and true 1080p but not much else as the market doesn't need it. Now you can take this a few ways.....

1. Its still strategic positioning and the PS4 demo we saw last night it part of it. EVEN if that's a PR strategy that could be suicidal. Showing lack luster games out of the gate isn't the smoothest of moves.

2. Developers are being paid to take part in the strategic positioning (very possible) but guys like Carmack and "B" haven't historically done that unless they have a game in the debut pool which at this point there is no sign of. Could they have been paid to down play the consoles? Or course. But, again that seems like a PR nightmare for MS and Sony.

3. MS and Sony both know top shelf hardware will in fact cost a LOT of money to mfg a console in a CRAPPY economy. They see people buying CoD over and over again with lack luster graphics and know that the market doesn't really need a HUGE jump in graphics. Just a small bump. They see that this time they can turn a profit per console a lot more early in the cycle than last time. SO why not make a mediocre console, turn profit early and keep the masses going with an affordable console?

4. MS and Sony have seen game development cost skyrocket this past decade and using x86 hardware was super smart IMO. However will that cost saving measure be enough to allow game developers less time coding and more time being creative....OR will publishers push for shorter deadlines to a better bottom line? I think we know who signs the checks.

I don't see any other way of looking at this scenario. Everything IMO points to another 10 years of lack luster gaming and honestly I think we are heading to another 1984 crash. Do you feel there is an option 5?

Another thing that puzzles me is that they expect close to 600$ for the base console alone so since we are in a recession how would mothers and fathers or college kids afford this console straight out? I would atleast home they would go by their previous numbers and sell around 300-350

Have they confirmed that cost yet? To me that seems VERY high at this point in the game. Nintendo learned that the hard way with the 3DS.

That is projected cost due to hardware listed. Not confirmed yet.

I don't see that. Even Sony had a SLOW start with that kinda price last time. I could be wrong but today 600 bones is a LOT of money.

Ok another site I found projected its cost from 450-550$ for base model.

You know what you're talking about right? OpenGL is pretty low level. Any lower and you would be designing hardware, not software or at very least, firmware.

Thats still a pretty good chunk of change.

$400 will be pretty good as considering the performance of the graphics and the potential to be a media server lite.

With inflation that's about as much as the Atari 2600 when it debuted and we were coming out of a recession then also.

the main reason I chose a PS3 back when they were first released was for the bluray player and Other OS. the bluray player was the best at the time and still is quite good even by todays newer standards thanks to firmware updates. they removed otherOS because of that exploit and that just pissed me off. since the ps4 isn't touting the ability to play a new type of media or give me the ability to put another OS on it for fun, i will be skipping it. instead, ill save that $500 and put it towards a shiny new gpu.

i totally agree with your point, but i know i'll end up getting it eventually. definitely not until the price drops below $300, which i know will be awhile, but that's what i did with ps3. I just know that there are console exclusives and ps4 exclusives i will want to play eventually.

Not that I would do any different, but the ps3 has lasted you 6 years, Not sure if a 500$ gpu will be able to match that. I certainly wouldn't want to be playing games right now on my X1950XT 256MB as I was when the ps3 came out. (granting the 8800 series was out by then and would be more enjoyable but still nowhere near ideal)

although hopefully in the next 6 years we'll be looking at All in One PC/Tv's that can game at 4k res. Making either purchase moot anyways.

AMD did an interview way before they grabbed the consoles in which they stated that They could see a future in which pc versions(and consoles) could once more be coded to the metal with No Api, and with things as they are ,its looking to me like the only porting going on in the future Might be to nvidia (with api) hardware

very true. but i rarely play any games on it. it makes a nice bluray player but also not because it does get hot and i can hear the fan blowing during quiet movie scenes.

I didn't watch the whole thing, did they say it was gonna be backwards compatible? Just seems like it wouldn't be. Did anyone hear?

Sony confirms that the PlayStation 4 won't play PS3 games natively
Legacy compatibility may come in the future through streaming services, however.

Wow if I had a PS3 that would upset me.

I DO have a PS3 and about 80 games...and I don't care.. Because I already have a PS3. The WiiU's success, with adding another device laying around, having to plug in and charge, etc, doesn't matter to most users. WiiU is still sold out regularly locally.
