Why can i not play fortnite with a decent PC?

So when i play fortnite i get a good 60 FPS then the frame drops to 30 FPS then 1 second later it goes back and then up (so on and so forth) and it keeps dropping insanely fast I have a decent pc:

AMD ATHLON CPU 3.7GHz
NVIDIA GTX 1050 2GB
SEAGATE 500GB HARDDRIVE 7200RPM
16GB DDR3 MEMORY
300W POWER SUPPLY

Why can i not play and have a steady frame rate? What can i do now to help fix this?

what CPU do You have specifically?
I see your GPU has 2Gb's of Vram, keeping graphical settings to lowest as well as resolution is a must.
although a 1050 is a good GPU, its low mid range in Gaming perf, what resolution are you gaming at?
also, going through nvidia control panel and making sure All options are at bare minimum and all set to maximum performance is a smart choice too.

Update your chipset drivers, defragment your harddrive, give us a screenshot of task manager, services, set antivirus to game mode.

Last I heard (which was a while back) fortnight wasn't the most stable game, if it's anything like it used to be using it to judge performance would be a poor decision, because although your computer maybe at fault for some ,I would guess that a portion is also at the fault of the game itself .

Do you experience issues like this in other games, or is it just something that you specifically see in this title? That question will answer my above comment.

I am playing on lowest settings possible, and i experience lag drops in all other games, but this one is the worst.

even on the lowest possible settings its still laggy.

Definitely CPU limited (Though 4 cores still isn't a model name, find it in System info (start > search/run cmd > sysinfo). Your rig isn't that decent anymore, the platform is simply too old.

@eidairaman1 's suggestions are still good ones to reduce the impact of CPU limitations, but I doubt they'll go away.

I don't think it's the CPU , I am well over 90fps and zero stuttering most of the time on max settings (except for shadows which are on high) and I use a an FX 6300. That Athlon can't be that bad. Fortnite is definitely more GPU bound than anything else , that being said a 1050 isn't a very fast card , try lowering settings and OCing a bit.

The graphics card isn't fast enough. Turning on vsync only shows up the problem more. Try Adaptive Sync in the driver and also set it for max performance for that game, or, preferably, upgrade the card if you can.

I'm not sure about that CPU, either. Basically, everything needs to be fast to maintain a consistently high framerate.

Having all your drivers and software updated to the latest like the others have said is also important, of course.

Yeah it's not your CPU. Make sure you are connectingto a Server in your country/area. I can run this on my ancient test system with a ati 5870, 4Gb DDR2 and a far slower chip then yours not to mention it's only a dual core. So I would check your game settings and make sure you are connecting to the right servers.

Fortnite is NOT a graphic intense game. All cell-shade like borderlands...very friendly for most rigs.

At first I had it confused with player unknown battlegrounds, but once I realized what game it was he was mentioning, it was very apparent that the chances of it being a hardware related issue limiting his performance are almost zero(aside from the possibility that his psu is sh!tting out and the system is not getting power as it should, but that would manifest less consistantly imo). That game is basically a fancy tower defense flash game, it's very light on hardware. My nephew plays on a 750 TI and a 3450 i5, and gets really good perf.

There's something else limiting his performance, my guess is something running in the background ,or not playing nice with the game. Or something similar ,that's creating an issue where otherwise there would be none.

Easy mistake. Best way to tell if it's PBUG is to look for all the Salt from players paying for a game that is surpassed by a Free Game...LOL.

Random fps drops are so difficult to diagnose. I always recommend buying a cheap HDD (there's a 250GB refirb on Newegg for $14), then install Windows on it so you get a fresh install with no bloatware that might be causing FPS lag. Just install bare minimum (nvidia drivers, Fortnite) then test and see if problem still exists. If it does then you can be pretty sure it's a hardware issue, if not then it was some software causing the issue.

I would agree with that ,except for the fact that he says that it happens in all games he plays, and although it still remains a possibility ,I would personally lean toward it being the performance restriction on his side rather than communication side . ultimately, it could be anything at this point, diagnosing without any observational senses (other than information given by a stranger) is at best, exceedingly difficult

However it is an easy problem to diagnose & rule out, he just needs to play a game locally ,and if he experiences no frame drops you know it's the communication most likely

ruling out my theory would be easy too, just set a Vsync for 30, or 40 FPS, and if he hits no drops in Perf, it will point to a performance limiting factor on his side

His GPU is fine, his CPU is fine. You can run that game on a 2400g. Either something is thermally not good or the PSU could be having issues depending on the brand. Also could be something running in the background.

What kind of PSU is it? and what are the AMP's? Im not sure on the amount of Amps the 1050 needs but maybe its not getting enough and its down clocking the card in the game as it cant get the power it needs?

I had an issue with this with my 1080 - it ended up being Shadowplay and low space on my C: as the "highlights" was recording and causing massive FPS drops. I ended up turning off Shadowplay and the Highlights function and this solved the issue. Something to take a look at.
