Why did they name it Windows 7 afterall?

I was bored and reading through general things about Windows versions and revisions.

I was trying to figure out why did they name "Windows 7". This is not version 7 of Windows... It's version 6.1. Vista is version 6.0 btw. Future Windows will probably be version 7 or something. One thing for sure, it's that they could'nt call it "Windows Vista SE" like they did for Windows 98 SE.

Imagine coming out with the name Vista SE instead of 7... Do you think that this would have influenced a lot of people in NOT getting it? What about Vista ME??? :laugh:

But when you take a better look at it, Windows 7 really is like a SE (Second Edition) of Vista.

Windows 98 was version 4.10.1998. Windows 98 SE was 4.10.2222 and had many improvements and some new features. Windows ME on the other hand had a much higher version number of 4.90.3000 and introduce a lot newer features but was regarded has the worse OS in Microsoft's history. :shadedshu

Everyone is saying that 7 is what Vista should have been. Sounds familliar? Win 98 SE heard this song way before. I use to have Win98SE a long time ago and yes, i did like it better than the original version. Does the same apply to 7 today, not really.

Putting a whole bunch of new features on top of an existing OS does it make it a brand new Windows or just an updated version of the same Windows?

Vista had a lot of negativity attached because it is rushed to compete with the (then) new Mac OS, hence "7" not Vista SE, it is just part of the marketing nonsense "Ohlookthisisournewproductwindows7notvista!Comeandbuynow!"

1. Windows 3
2. Windows 95
3. Windows 98
4. Windows ME
5. Windows 2000/XP
6. Windows Vista
7. Windows 7

just made sense to me that way haha

of course... people are so shallow that most wouldn't give it another chance if it was called vista SE, so microsoft chose wisely to change the name

Microsoft always does this.

They took 95, added some features, and called it 98. I don't consider 98SE a new OS, as much as the same OS with a service pack, as most of the features added would have been considered a Service Pack by todays standards.

They took 2000, prettied it up and added a few features and called it XP.

Now they took Vista, prettied it up and added a few features can called it Win7.

They even did the same thing with the version numbers. 95 was 4.0 and 98 was 4.10. 2000 was 5.0 and XP was 5.1. Vista is 6.0 and Win7 is 6.1...

I don't think Vista 2 would of worked out very well.

At the very least they are beginning to concentrate on simple numbers like grown-ups. Maybe in the future they will stay away from 'versions' (more like releases, which doesn't make sense considering Vista WAS the first major version leap since 98->2K but whatever) like ME, XP, and Vista and just stick to the numbers. Everyone else seems to be doing it successfully. At the very least it appears that their next planned release is Windows 8. Hope they keep it that way.

Windows NT = 4.0
Windows 2000 = 5.0
Windows XP = 5.1
Windows XP x64/Server 2003 = 5.2
Windows Vista = 6.0
Server 2008 = 6.1
Windows 7 = 7.0

The Vista name was tarnished mostly by Apple marketing. The name simply had to go.

Well, sorry if anyone might hate me for saying this but through my own experience of owning 2 rigs on Vista and 2 rigs on windows 7 I really appreciate nothing except for the eye beauty of having one OS enabling wallpaper changing at my whim. Which is really minor :ohwell:

Vista x64 suits me fine, it runs well on both my rigs in system specs. And yes I game on them and have my desktop oc'd @ 4.2Ghz.

After SP2 it was bogged way down, I was Expecting SP3 to speed it up but it didn't, in fact for some users it caused them to crash more.
