Why is my C drive heating up when I'm copying files on my D and E drives?

CopyFile is actually part of the Windows API, so it really resides in memory. After boot, if you want to be pedantic.
There used to be a copy.exe on C:, but not anymore.

so things have changed a bit, always thought it was part of cmd.exe like it was in DOS.

Well, it is part of cmd.exe, it's just that cmd.exe uses the API call.

I mean, the problem of avoiding unnecessary copying is really old, if not completely fixed. That's why we have things like DMA, DirectStorage and such.

Even so, the command issues a command, then DMA takes over almost instantly.

Maybe if you have turned on the option (of your USB drive) to use caching there is a possibility Windows may be buffering your file copy to your page file (typically on your primary drive) if the buffer in RAM is not large enough. Have you observed your disk activity in Task Manager to confirm if there is any disk activity on your C: during the copy from D to E?

Is your C drive SSD an NVMe drive on your motherboard right above your GPU? Depending on your case airflow you can have an airflow dead spot there preventing cooler air from reaching your SSD..

The C drive (SATA SSD) is behind the motherboard. I did another robocopy (lasting 10 minutes) tonight, the C drive goes from 35 to 38. Task manager shows no activity on C. However, the room temp has gone down to 32C from 35C since it's nighttime. The two drives involved in the copy reached 39 to 40C almost the same as earlier. Maybe there was something going on earlier, although I did two copies then with C spiking then.

Are C: and E: SSD's NVME Drives that share the same (built on to the motherboard) heatsink? That would heat up the nearby drive a little due to dissipating heat from the active drive.

There are a number of cases that have slots built on the back side, under the motherboard. That’s why I asked if the C drive was either above the others or with little airflow. OP’s statement that it is mounted on the backside explains the higher temps a lot. They aren’t bad places to put them, but SSD’s will run warmer there.

IIRC, even with MS-DOS 6 and possibly sometime before that, the copy command is an internal command. (meaning not a separate program)

You're probably thinking of xcopy, which has more options.

it gets close to 60 once my gpu kicks in and the drive gets a nice breeze of hot gpu air under its buttocks
