So long story short i killed one of two my ram slots in my LGA1155 board DH61WW and now stuck with 4gb of ram and its not enough for pubg or even my day to day crome tabs i currently have 2x 4gb DDR3 1333mhz and a 1x 8gb 1866mhz and the 8gb does not work on my board as it seems to not work on sticks with frequency above 1333mhz

so either i can sell all my rams and buy 8gb 1333mhz (100$) and be done with it for couple years or i can buy a new "ASUS P8B75-M Motherboard" for about (250$) that gives me headr4rom for 32gb and options for oc as well as ability to use my 2tb drive that i currently use a sata to usb adapter with but asus board seller is kinda dodgy

now i have a problem, i need to make sure upgrade paths for me stay clear as my 2600(NON K) is adequte for gaming and thats all i ask for, afaik it will be good for 5-6 years before games become such cpu hogs and with new board i have chance for a OC of 4Ghz+

i dont live in us/uk so my options are kinds limited (in)

i7 2600
2x 4gb ram (1 is appicable)
1x 8gb ram (unusable with board)
Intel DH61WW
Gtx680 2 gb
Samsung Evo 512gb
Corsair GS 700
2x 1 tb drives
1x 2 tb drive

Nobody can answer that. Your needs may completely change in 5 years.

But I will say this. DDR3 RAM will like be much harder to find in 5 - 7 years. It already has been superseded by DDR4 and that may be superseded by DDR5 or DDR6 by then. So even if you can find compatible RAM in 5 years, it likely will be very expensive (and used).

So I say buy what you think you might need - now.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Why is will in quotes??????

Anyway, 2600 is showing its age already. While it is adequte now, it is holding mid-high end GPUs back and some CPU heavy titles. I shudder to think what gaming on that processor in 2-3 years, none the less 5-6... I couldn't imagine gaming on a 10 year old CPU today. That GTX 680 is choking in PUBG as well. at 2560x1440 with high settings, I use over 6GB of vram. I have to imagine you are using more than your allotted 2GB already even at 1080p....

Id start saving for a significant upgrade much sooner than later to improve your gaming experience. Id grab a GTX 1070 or Vega 56 for 1080p gaming.

Remember that your Operating system can easily eat 2-3 GB+ doing nothing .If you play a game more gets gobbled up.
8 GB ram is the standard now.

You always have ebay as ram will never disappear completely.

I would go Z77 at 66$ (aliexpress, maybe Z68 also but has to be B3 chipset the SATA bug fixed) and 2x8 DDR3 with later adding 2x8, actually, I m adding my second 2x8 now, just so there are plenty of DDR3 where I live and no motherboards or CPUs for them. Sellers are freaking. Well there is the problem of the momery controller voltage and supported speeds with 4 modules things get tricky at above 1866 Mhz.
Do you plan on using the GTX 680 for all those years, i think GTX 1070 is the minimum and every 2 years moving to the next xx70 card.

great response thanks but am sure 2nd hand sellers will do well and if i get new board i will make sure to get 32 gb by 2018 but tbh ram there is no point in paying for anything over 16gb as of now there will always be 2nd hand sellers and money here is better spent for gpu i will probably get in 2018

woah i was under impression this was the opposite for most well optimized games, i was planning to get by with oc i7 2600 for this decade

also will i even be able to reach 4.5ghz with that asus board ?

If you are multitasking a lot, 8Gb might be too tight. Especialy if you are a tab collector who keep them open "for later". 16Gb is really giving a more confortable headroom, 8Gb is still usable, you just need to take just a little time to manage what you keep open.

i saw aliexpress and they seem to have good prices for old or used board any idea about shipping rates or stuff ?

haha yeh seeing 10-15% diff for new chips vs 2600, in most optimized games have given me some faith that might last me sometime, i do need to upgrade my gpu though should be next volta xx60

5-7 years down the line you will probably want 16GB but 8 is more then enough for now and the next few years. See test results and remember the games tests were taken with 65 active tabs in the background.

https://www.techspot.com/article/1043-8gb-vs-16gb-ram/page3.html

Those building a new system or simply looking to upgrade their memory capacity, the answer is simple: 8GB should be the minimum standard, while 16GB is desirable but not needed. For general usage and gaming there is no advantage to be had by using 16GB or more RAM, though admittedly system memory has hit new lows in 2016 which makes it very accessible even in budget builds.

In gaming scenarios we were surprised to see 4GB will help you extract most out of your system (actual gameplay frame rates versus say, loading levels) but 8GB remains ideal. Those of you focused solely on gaming who don't have the extra cash to splurge on 16GB of memory, fear not, you aren't missing out on any hidden performance. For folks who insist that certain game mods will use over 8GB of RAM, that's fine, go for it, but as far as we're able to determine there aren't any popular games that require over 8GB without mods.

Well I5-8400 mostly equals I7-2600, both cant be overclocked, are not bottlenecking VEGA64. And are likely to be relevant for the next 5-6 years just like i5-2500 still is some 6 years later since launch.... As long as the Video card has 8GB memory you can use 16GB RAM comfortably.. But if you have 12 or 16GB GPU it is likely that the game will fill also fill at least that amount of RAM. The operating system uses at least 1.5.

boards are being shipped often for free, there may be customs and added value taxes depending on the declared value and the local law. i don't know about the risk of bend pins of the socket.

I could be wrong, but don't most gaming executables cap at something like 3-4gb of ram usage anyway, being 32 bit? When 64 bit executables become the mainstream (which IS starting to happen) then you might have a problem.

1. an i7-2600 holds back Vega64 and similar cards. Its close to 30% slower IPC and slower clockspeeds...
2. What does GPU memory being 8GB have to do with 16GB of RAM?
3. "If you have 12/16GB GPU game will also fill at least that amount of RAM" - What? I have an 8GB GPU and some games don't come close to iusing even 4GB.......most don't use 8GB.

I needed to upgrade to 16g from 8gb as soon as EA Battlefront came out. And that was something like 2 years ago.

the 2600 holds its ground well against 8700K. (hardware canucks, hardware unboxed).
games that don't fill Graphics Mem as much do not fill the System RAM as much. it is proportional at least.

4 is the absolute minimum for 64bit Windows.

My OS tuned uses 2GiB by itself and the 14GiB is for everything else.

You can be fine with 8.

I like this video here. I'll probably be sticking to 8 as long as possible....:). Considering he has a 2600, perhaps he should just hold on to that for awhile and in the meantime save for a new pc? If I had a 2600(2500k in specs), I could drag it out years from here ~ easily. Helluva nice cpu...that is only NOW showing it's age? I've been hearing these calls since the 7th generation came out, because I'd imagine people want Sandy Bridge to "die already", but I'm not seeing it. For the common man that doesn't have deep pockets, it's a helluva platform.

Best,

Liquid Cool

Core 2 lasted awhile, some still game on it, along with Phenom, Phenom 2, FX etc.

If you have the means why not , an additional 8 GB of RAM isn't that expensive.

If you plan to keep the 2600 for 5-7 more years. DDR3 will be hard to find by then, so get another 8GB now(although DDR2 can still be found now, it's quite limited) . Don't underestimate future programs' ability to unnecessary eat rams, especially if most of the systems 7 years later will have an average of 16GB RAM, even phones are increasing in RAM count. Updated versions of Windows, Chrome, MS Office, etc. will have increased RAM Usage by then, not even mentioning that can games in 2022 will eat more RAM. compare 2010 ram usage to to 2017 ram usages. don't understimate them, it adds up.

The 2600 is getting quite old though, you cannot overclock it to reach Haswell levels of performance, so you're stuck with pure Sandy Bridge performance and the difference will be noticeable. so it might not last for 5-7 years more. that or it finally breaks.

@Edwards 446, I find my system eating 8 GBs of RAM quite easily and that's without even trying. Get a couple of tabs going in Google Chrome and I guarantee you that with 8 GBs of RAM that system is going to start eating into the Page File and that's going to kill performance real quick.

I have 16 GBs of RAM in my current system, I'm thinking about going with 32 GBs in my next system.
