Will my board support a GTX 970/80 card?

Hey guys, been outta the pc loop for quite a long time. I did some googling but couldn't find an exact answer so I resourced to good ol' TPU.

Up until now I have been satisfied with my system and games. I just downloaded the new Bf1 and even with all settings on Low, the game still performs poorly so it's time for an upgrade. Originally I just wanted to swap the gpu with something better, faster and magical.., but now realizing my pc might be a dinosaur.

Q: Will the 900 series Nvidia cards work with my Asus Maximus III formula P55 chipset?
*see system specs for further compatibility issues (if any)

It will work. Whether there will be bottlenecking, I don't know, but I can't imagine there will be anything noticeable. I've got new GPUs in way older motherboards and they run fine.

Even if there is bottlenecking, it will still be a huge performance upgrade from your current experience. Go for it.

For reference, I've got a gtx 770 paired with a q6600 in an old nForce mobo ... it works great.

It will support it, although your poor old dual core isn't gonna cut it for BF1

Do you think it's worth my time pairing an intel Xeon and gtx 970/80 with my existing system for a decent performance in games today? or should I just save up and fork out the $$$ for a whole new build. I would love the first option if it yields good results at a low cost. Also keeping in mind that I do not play as many games as in my youth, between 2 and 3 new games a year these days. :oops:

That X3460 is basically identical to a i7-860 for $40. Plus, luckily, P55 still allows BCLK overclocking. So pushing the Xeon to 4GHz should be possible with a decent air cooler.

That X3470 is only a little bit more, and the same as an i7-870.

cause its pretty affordable, you might have to investigate prices, sometimes there is an i7 pretty cheap or xeon all depends the market

again, im pretty dumb on xeon field! i love core i 7's

If you really want to go Xeon get a X5677 3.46GHz turbo 3.73GHz.

970 or 980 would be a big upgrade, but would still be held back IMO by the CPU and the RAM.

If you could do one other thing than upgrade your video card, then I would have to say at least up that 4GB RAM to 8GB.

Don't purchase a GTX 900 Series card unless it's a 980Ti. You are going to need more that the 3.5 fast VRAM of the 970, and the 4GB of the 980.
Right now, a custom Radeon RX 480 8GB beats both of those cards for around $240.
