Firstly, that was done before the new drivers for Radeon came out.
Secondly, TPU benchmarks have been known to show worse results for Radeon cards than most other reviews.
Thirdly, why you bought a 980 recently is beyond comprehension when has been made so obsolete, especially when you could get a new 980Ti for $400, or a Fury for $350.
@cdawall I wouldn't bother, it's not like your going to cause a change of mindset or RMA.

had $250-300 to upgrade, got the 980 fot that money, great card, still performing pretty well, also a friend have the 8GB RX 480, playing the same games on his computer with both card i could tell that the GTX 980 is faster on some games, like the TPU chart says, maybe there is a little difference on results but its minimal, also for COD GTX is pretty slower... tests were made last week... for having fun and see what our video cards could do, in fact im pretty happy with my current one... but your comment its pretty valid bro

Which drivers and card. I imagine the reference ones (especially release date cards) this may be true, but any of the half decent custom designs smoke it...especially on new drivers.

Indeed... the answer to the OP is: Yes. The 9 series card will work. There may be some slight bottlenecking due to your processor, but that can be upgraded as well (or later). As for now, it is safe to use a 9 series card in your current system, and it will be a huge performance upgrade for you, bottlenecked or not.

I say go for it. Upgrade the processor/motherboard when you can.

A NEW Radeon RX 480 8GB VRAM is cheaper, has more VRAM, and outperforms the GTX 1060.

Given all of that information, I see no point in buying a similar priced used 980 over a used 1060. It just doesn't make any sense.

It's like talking to a brick wall that only reads the headlines. The 1060 is the exact same situation as the 480 vs the 980. Both cards beat the 980.
