I am not expecting any price cuts....I believe they will increase the price a little bit...That's the reason y i placed an order for 5850 after watching the fermi reviews....fermi cards are hot and power consumption is very high....and also the prices are so high ...In India gtx 480 costs 710 $ and 470 costs 620$ ..

I think AMD might drop the prices by ... hmmm .. lets say $20-$30 ... so that ... from a buyers perspective ... $380-$390 HD5870s and $280-$290 HD5850s would be more appealing than $500+ GTX480s and $350+ GTX 470s ...

Well ... the prices on the 5970's have gone through the roof and they very difficult to find.
It looks like ZipZoomFly has one brand available, but they want $800 for it. :wtf:

Not only "why would ATI cut prices?" but why would they come out with a refresh until nvidia makes a significant move. Just think about it.

5870 is much cheaper than the 480 and about 7-10% slower on average. The 5970 is still very pricey, but faster than the 480 and also runs cooler with the same amount of power (or is it on less power).

My hope is that ATI will make money this round, get themselves in good shape and then have a couple of nice refresh cards for when nvidia tries to make a performance move.

Their prices haven't changed since launch. MSRP remains the same. Blame your local retailer/etailer. ATi could most definitely come out with a card somewhere in between the 5870 and 5890, they just need to sell more 5870's first. ;)

In no way trying to troll here, but it does not matter if ATI is making 100% profit on each and every card sold....at the end of the day they are still attached to AMD....:toast:

It already stated, ATI want to keep the pressure on Nvidia and have no plans for a re-fresh right now. At around June-July they release Southern Island design which is mix of new design Northern Island with Evergreen (HD 5800 series) as the re-fresh line. If Nvidia makes move fast, ATI is already ready to release this re-fresh which is now sitting idle and being improved day by day.;)

ATI already made a lot of money with Evergreen, they shipped more than 2 million cards plus with higher than expect demand ever since Fermi release.

aye, but aren't amd getting themselves back into shape processor wise? their desktop cpu's offer the best performance/price going easily, and most gamers go for phenom II 955/965 due tot he price and ability to keep up with the i7 in nearly all games. Plus athlon quads are dirt cheap for mid range computers.

This proof CPU does not bottleneck the GPU anymore or if it does not as much. I see benchmark with fast i7 vs. PII and i7 wins with 2 to 3 FPS more, not really a win that is :D
AMDs Phenom II X6 are going to be best price/performance for gamers and video editors. Cant wait for upgrade.

If they dont cut prices im not buying i still think the 5850 is slightly to expensive, just drop it sub £200 and you would see those cards going a lot faster. The 5830 is almost as expensive as the 5850 which is pointless.

Sorry but the last few gen of cards have not cost this much.

I dont have that kind of cash to blow so i just have to stick to what i have, RAM and GPU have went up in price while hard drives and CPU's are actually really good prices at the moment.

couldn't agree more with you there.

HD 5850 - $289
HD 5830 - $239
HD 5770 - $149

The HD 5830 is much closer to the HD 5850's price than the HD 5770's. Most people that would consider buying the HD 5830 probly run either 1680x1050 or 1920x1080. If you look at the graphs by w1z, the HD 5830 is only 5-7% faster than the HD 5770 on avg. yet the HD 5850 is 37-40% faster than the HD 5830.

Price wise the HD 5830 should be hella lot closer to the HD 5770. The HD 5850 costs ~21% more than the 5830, yet the HD 5830 costs ~38% more than the HD 5770. 37-40% more perf for 21% more cost makes alot more sense than paying 38% more than the HD 5770 for 5-7% more performance. HD 5830 is horribly priced and personally, anyone that purchases one is, imo and no offense, really stupid
