Will triple channel RAM work on a dual channel board?

I'm seeing some good deals about with some 3x2gb triple channel kits being just as cheap as 2x2gb dual channel kits. I was thinking I could perhaps get a 3x2gb kit for my pc, use 4gb on it and then have 2gb for another pc build. Maybe a better idea would be get 6x2gb and use 8gb on my machine and 4gb on the other machine. Will this work?

These "kits" are nothing more than having a certain number of modules sold together. You could have a "50 channel" kit, it's all the same.

So yes, you can get whatever is the best value and use the modules as you see fit.

Single, dual, and triple chan modes are set by the motherboard, on a x58, if you only run 2 sticks, it will run in dual channel vs 2 stick in single channel. Not sure why the bother stating that on the RAM packaging.

yep theres no difference with dual or triple or quad channel ram, basicly they are the same, except they marked with like xmp profile that optimized for intel based the rest just the same

yep its been said a heap of times already, but it will work just fine they way you have it planned.

just remember that you may need all 3 sticks together if you need to claim warranty.
