Exactly!
BTW: Thanks for writing posts for me. ;)

I'm also on 3930K for a while now and am eagerly awaiting 8-12 core 6960X (or whatever it might be called then).

Regarding core-count: The current-gen HEDT chips based on Haswell-E are in fact already 8-core/6-core CPUs. So I would be really surprised (and also very disappointed) to see a 6-core chip as the new highend with Skylake-E again. It has to be at least 8-core, though I wouldn't mind a 12-core version.
6960X -> 12-core full-blown Skylake-E, 6930K -> 8-core high-end and 6820K -> 6-core or 8-core seems reasonable.
Haswell-E has up to 16 or 18c CPUs on the Xeon lineup. It's not like Intel can't make these CPUs, it's just that your average consumer would probably see less performance for the clocks these CPUs have to run at.

Either way, my lowly little 3820 still runs everything perfectly fine. As a result, I have zero plans on upgrading my platform. Even more so since I found out my 3820 can do PCI-E 3.0.

I only upgraded to my 3960X when Haswell-E came out and the extreme enthusiast jumped ship. Haswell-E when Skylake-E comes out might be the next. Mid-Range Skylake is of no interest to me.

Now that the reviews are out, how do you feel about Skylake?

Still on an i7 930, it's served me well but it's time for a 6700k!

probably when i get my tax refund next year.

On my Q9450 and it's time for a 6700k... which I bought 1 day before actual launch... and now waiting and waiting for any other components availability, that has good enough stats for me.... and there doesn't seem to be. Waiting for G.Skill 2x16GB kits to actually become available. Also need a ITX motherboard that has it all (and has support for those G.Skill RAM)... so far none exists. Also we have zero Samsung SM951 NVMe drives in shops (AHCI version exists, but ... who cares?). Also the short GPU selection is ... non-existent (frankly only 2 models of GTX 970) ... would like to actually see Nano benchmarks before buy. And they also pushed Vive launch to march 2016, so any rush I might have had before, is delayed... so I can almost even wait out Pascal / Arctic Islands before proceeding.

Bottomline is: Cannot upgrade because they don't sell components I want. BUT will once they do.

Waiting for Thunderbolt3, and then ditching desktops altogether by getting a TB3 laptop and an EGPU enclosure for a GPU at the home dock. My HD7950 will transfer to that, and off I go.

Finally got it ordered from Newegg but could only order it as a combo. Newegg customer service said they don't expect to offer it on its own until the end of September because there isn't enough supply. As of about 2 hours ago, they were out of stock again, even on combos.

6700K should be about a 100% jump in performance from my 920. I think it is time to upgrade.

Also still pushing my 920, "everyday tasks" and gaming are still fairly fast and responsive so i don't see a reason to upgrade just yet.

Have you received yours (atleast your sys spec says so :p )? Was it a very notable performance increase ?

I think the big jump mostly stems from UEFI and SSD. My computer cold boots in 20 seconds and is generally very responsive. This is a subjective opinion but I believe either Windows 10, the 6700K, updated BOINC, or a combination of all three makes the computer noticeably more responsive when the CPU is at 100% load. I don't know if it is BOINC backing off quicker, Windows 10 managing threads better, or the 6700K managing threads better, but since switching, I haven't felt compelled to put the brakes on BOINC yet.

As for performance, I never really benchmark anything so I can't give numbers. I also haven't played the same game before/after update to compare. I don't regret the upgrade but, mind you, I went into 6700K assuming I'd upgrade to a Skylake-based HEDT or Zen next year. At the same time, I am now asking myself "why?" To which, I don't have an answer.

USB3 is also a welcome change (I have a stupid fast USB3 flash drive).

Thanks. Yeah, my SSD and GPU upgrade made it into an entirely new machine, so after that I haven't felt the urge to upgrade anything else. Neither do I care much about benchmarks..

In the end it always boils down to the €€ and at the moment ~500€ for CPU+MOBO+RAM feels a bit out of reach. I'd rather spend it on a larger monitor.

BTW, what's a BOINC ?

BOINC is the Berkley Open Infrastructure for Online Computing.

In short, it's using idle CPU cycles to calculate for a cause. You choose the cause, and run the computer. When it'd regularly be idle it's helping to crunch. The catch is the online part, and the fact that you need a massive swarm of computers to get any real work done. If internet data transfer caps exist, or you choose a less popular project, it might be a while before you see results. Realistically though, it's using a resource that would otherwise be wasted to do real good.

Edit:

To the original post, no. Skylake is nice, but it's just not enough. DDR4 is still too immature to realize benefits. The overclocking is better, but that isn't hard considering FIVR was finally killed. The connectivity is nice, but there has yet to be an affordable drive using any of the hot new interconnections. On top of all of that, the iGPU continues to grow and be a tumor on an otherwise capable CPU die.

Let's see Skylake-e, and then we can decide. If Intel can deliver on real DDR4 improvements, full SATA III connections, better baked in USB, and do all of this without crippling PCI-e lanes then it'll be a genuine upgrade to SB-e.

Honestly though, my 2500k is still chugging along on a gaming platform. Unless it experiences a catastrophic failure my next real investment will be in a GPU. The 7970 is venerable (considering it's basically the same thing as is inside the 3xx series), but I'm looking forward to something more powerful and cooler. That'd serve me a lot better than a slightly improved CPU.

Just switched my platform to use a 6700K. Haven't OC'ed it yet. I wonder if overclocking will help my SLI scale even better. Bought it at the retail MSRP since getting a deal on Skylake is impossible right now.

Perhaps add a line to the poll for those that bought it already?

I'm pretty sure that if there is no HDMI/DVI/DP cable plugged in to the iGPU ports, power to the iGPU is gated off. I have nothing plugged in to it and Windows 10 won't even let me install drivers for the iGPU--it effectively doesn't exist. It doesn't even show up in DirectX Diagnostics.

My point is that the iGPU takes up physical space. Looking at the Intel history:
Lynnfield: 296 mm^2 - 45nm
Gulftown: 239 mm^2 - 32nm
SB: 216 mm^2 - 32nm
IB: 160 mm^2 - 22nm
Haswell: 177 mm^2 - 22nm

The size of dies is relatively consistent, among the architectural revision periods. Whenever the process shrinks, so too does the die area. It isn't exactly 1:1, but the trend is clear. The reality is that Intel is only adding so many transistors with each die shrink, and they are increasing the iGPU all of the time. That means the transistors have to come from somewhere, which is why an iGPU is a tumor on a CPU. It isn't necessarily malignant (like FIVR), but it continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you are to simply turn the iGPU off the die area is still consumed, even if dark.

Skylake is interesting in that it finally offers a distinct improvement over SB (in overclocking), but that's largely in spite of the iGPU (read:death the FIVR and decent thermal material). This is why I look forward to the enthusiast offerings. They might be more expensive, but you don't pay for an iGPU that isn't used.

The associated cost with the super high end enthusiast line is only worth it for the very few of us that need it. What that 2011/2011 v3 enthusiast segment is best for is beaten by Xeon offerings which fill that void beyond it. Socket 2011 and 2011 v3 is a compromise at best. It offers an unnecessary "jack of all trades, king of none".

Best case scenario is a real server for server duties and a real customized gaming rig for gaming right? In that respect the real compromise is going for socket 2011/2011 v3 enthusiast grade rather than a professional server and a purpose built gaming rig.

Exactly what is it that you've been smoking. I've got to get me some of it.

Intel has three target markets, consumer, prosumer, and professional. The largest single market is consumer, because it includes the cheapest chips and most business users (laptops, terminals, etc...). It caps out at 4 cores to save costs, and includes an iGPU to save money. The next largest market is professional. This market differs because it generally caters to specified applications, meant to run a ton of systems in parallel. That's why Xeon chips have large numbers of slower cores, but virtualization and other features. The smallest, but most profitable market (per chip) is the prosumer. They clock similarly to the consumer, but don't have an iGPU. They have more cores, but not massive quantities. These chips are meant to have a few users, but be computational workhorses. Think rendering, calculating, and engineering.

To say that Xeon and enthusiast chips perform in the same market is to completely forget the frequency of those chips.

So, no the enthusiast sockets aren't a compromise. You seem to have a false understanding of what that means. The enthusiast chips are for a niche market. The compromise that you can cite Intel for is the $15 surcharge to get a k series chip. That locking is a compromise between minor decreased cost and a huge amount of potential performance being locked away.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
didn't originally intended to do it ... but a little ... incident made me do it (lightning can be really persuasive when it come to make you change some perfectly running hardware ...) otherwise my MVIIR and 4690K would still be enough (obvious eh?)

plus my etailer did a overnight delivery for the mobo and the 6600K (only the RAM was delayed of 1 day more)

I keep sitting my ass back on the fence, stuck in a "when is it too early or too late to adopt" cycle. My entire rig has evolved in four years up to the point even my memory had to change out due to damage to the mobo or socket pins. But it's the same x79 and 3930k from Nov 2011 in the soul of my machine. I know from various benchmarks that the Sandybridge IPC is now at a distinct disadvantage and the 6 cores doesn't help out when speed is key. My 3930k is stable (has been for almost 4 years) at 4.2-4.4Ghz, funnily the Witcher 3 showed me 4.4 wasn't stable...
But I figure I'm losing perhaps 10-15% fps on the IPC from Sandy to Skylake in gaming. If I intend on going 4K on one card, that 10-15% fps may be pivotal in game performance. I see that Broadwell-E is out in Feb/Mar 2016 but again, more cores is pretty meaningless for me (surely 4/8 is as adequate as 6/12) unless DX12 and games start to miraculously code for uber cores?

I'm pretty tempted by Skylake on a Maximus VIII mobo. That combo costs about the same as a single 5930k. And i don't really fancy going back to sli or crossfire options so is X99 any use to me???
