I finally got the "Fall Creators" update a few days ago. So far everything seems to be working fine with two small exceptions:

1) I can no longer minimize games with the Windows key on the keyboard. A lot of games used to seamlessly minimize to a smaller window (such as BF4/1) so I could quickly do something on the desktop and then click on the game window to maximize to full screen again. Is there any setting that the update may have changed which would effect this?

2) Each time I restart Windows it Windows Defender pops up in a window. Not much of a problem but I don't see the need for it to pop up each time I restart Win 10 to tell me that my device is protected. Just another pointless click to close. Any work around in Defender settings to make it not popup at startup?

1) did you try alt-tab from the game and alt-tab back?

2) win 10 fall update has a feature to reopen any app that was present before the restart, they seem to pop up. I use classic shell to restart from the start menu, which does not have this behaviour- reopen any app that was open pre-restart. You may try to disable auto start with autoruns utility for the entry msascuil or similar( security health)

Open task manager, go under start up, remove the Microsoft security essentials GUI. That should resolve it, and unless I'm mistaken it'll still run in the background ,but the user interface won't be in the corner of the , & hopefully it will remedy your 2nd issue.

As far as minimizing game windows, I haven't noticed a problem with that. whenever I hit the windows button , it pulls up the taskbar ,and it drops a full screen game ,or 3-D application into windowed mode

right click the exe and under compatibility; check disable full screen optimizations

Tried this with all of the BF4 .exes as well as the Origin .exe with no luck.

@Flogger23m - I feel your pain with stupid issues brought on by the update.

Stupid update struck my HTPC......screwed up or outright removed all the permissions on the couple of accounts I had on there. I just spent 60 minutes going through and adjusting permissions on everything. The kids account and permissions were the worst; on every item they can use is read & execute and read only, but when setting the permission on the parent folder Windows couldn't push the changes down on the items inside it - kept giving some error and I couldn't find an easy work around. I even tried changing ownership of the folders my account I log in on (not the main admin), but Windows still had issues applying the permission settings. I had to go into every item personally to add the kids user account and set permission.

Windows 10 - you make me hate you.

Guess I'll go through and re-install Nvidia drivers just to make sure they're working as intended. Hopefully no other stupid issues come from this update.

Ugh yet another one falls, this really sucks yet another point against 10... smh

you are not intended to use file permissions for that silly
thats what parental controls are for

I mean every windows ever has had someone complain. If we accept one complaint as "another mark against windows" none have ever worked right.

FWIW, it works fine for me.

@Flogger23m I actually just tried this tonight. Try another method: I did Ctrl-Alt-Del, then when Task Manager window came up over the game, I hit Cancel. This minimizes the game to task bar until I was ready to maximize it again.

I don't care what some of you folks say about Windows 10 - it's a POS if you ask me. Since that shitty Fall Creators update, missing DX9 files, missing .net framework files.....The few games on the computer wouldn't run due to DX9 files missing....MSI Afterburner wasn't working, GPU-Z wasn't working......after a bunch of downloads and installs from Windows and restarts I'm now getting a BSOD (or Recovery) screen when the computer starts.

"Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information"

Time to screw around with the HTPC computer more, see if I can't get it working properly.....

its not a POS you are doing it wrong plain and simple

I have had zero problems with msi afterburner or dx9 gpuz or any of that

that boot up error means something is gone wrong with your drive's or you fked around messing with drive permissions you know not what you did and borked /bcd

as for games anything that uses Securom will not run period bad drm is bad bad drm is shitlisted at the kernel level

No, I know what I'm doing. I hate people that have some presumptuous response that someone is "doing it wrong" simply because they had no issues during their experiences. I'm glad you've had no issues. I had zero issues with Windows 10 until the Fall Creators update.

I know how to set permissions. I haven't ran a game that requires Securom.

Pre Fall Creators - no game issues, no issues with MSI, no issues with GPUZ

Post Fall Creators - loss of permissions and users, issues with DX9 files missing, games not launching, GPUZ not working. I ran DDU and removed the video driver, then installed a new driver. After that GPUZ and MSI loaded up, but still had issues with DX9 files missing which are required for the render test in GPUZ. Windows located the missing DX9 files from the microsoft site and downloaded and installed. I simply wanted to run the render test to make sure MSI Afterburner was reading the GPU properly and fan settings were working as intended, but even after DX9 files were downloaded and installed, Windows said other files were needed to run the program and had to download and install - several Window file downloads and restarts.....she won't boot.

Think what you want, but snide remarks make you sound foolish.

The backup drive has similar issues as the main one since the update. I find it hard to believe both drives are having issues if it wasn't caused by the Fall Creators update. I'll just cut my losses, pull out any important data to my main PC and do a clean install when I get more time.

I've had nothing but problems with the recent updates. And I don't mean their effect, but the updates themselves. Updating made the system unresponsive and it got stuck at the restarting screen whenever I tried to apply them, then messed up the file system and had to run chkdisk error correction every time. This was somehow caused by RAID0, although I had it for a while and never had any problems before. It got to a point when I finally took apart my RAID volume and installed w10 again on a single SSD, I have no problems now.
Also, after the fall update g-sync was totally messed-up for no obvious reason, until I found out it was the game bar option disabled in windows settings that got it back to work normally.

Finally found a fix for number 2. Open Task Manager, Startup tab, find Windows Defender User Interface, uncheck from start up. I had thought that would disable the icon in the task bar, but it merely stops that annoying pop up.

Still no solution for number 1 though. I miss quickly minimizing BF4! :p
