So I robocopy-ed a directory the other day, and realized partway through the operation that I'd screwed up. Ctrl-C, time to delete the directory and start over. But it's not there. At least, not according to File Explorer or dir. I can type the path and get there, and dir then shows the contents, but it won't let me delete a bunch of the files. Spend a few minutes reading up on Powershell file manipulation commands, then think to myself, "I wonder if Windirstat will see it?" Sure 'nuff, pops right up. Not only that, but it deletes the whole thing without a peep of complaint. rmdir was much less accommodating. By which I mean spit out a couple of dozen errors about permissions. Suppose there was some flag set or not set that caused the MS commands to freak out, but Windirstat doesn't care about. Or something.

Recently came to know about in a reddit thread. So good. I always formatted the drives when it gets filled by what I like to call ghost files. But WinDirStat helps me find those and delete it.

Its been in my utility folder for nearly 20 years - going back to its predecessor, KDirStat. It's great to help determine what is eating up disk space.

I have tried WinDirStat, it's really good, my only complaint is that it gets slow on hard drives(on my system only, I guess?). I use WizTree because it is faster, but is suitable for NTFS only, as far as I can research. Keeping both on my apps lib tho

There are other tools which are better - Directory Report

"Best" here wasn't meant literally. But vs. DR for $25, I'll stick with WDS.

This looks to be worth trying out, however.

Been using it for years. One of the best utilities out there and still works great on the latest build of W10 even though it's not had an update in years.

Directory Report is nice, but no way is it worth $25. In fact, IMO, it is not even worth $1 - not when there are several other just as capable programs out there that are totally free. If you like Directory Report, check out TreeSize Free.

Also good is is Folder Size. Initial scanning is not very quick, but then I don't put speed for this type utility as a top priority.

As far as WinDirStat not being updated in recent years - there hasn't been a need. The way files are stored on disks has not changed so no need to change how WinDirStat works or displays them.
