Probably Windows Defender. Post a screen of the "Processes" and sort by disk usage.

I feel @sneekypeet explained it pretty clearly. But let me give this a try. This is a tech forum and you're welcome to ask questions. Sneeky is referring to you being able to have asked this question in a previous thread that you had already created seeking help, which would've still kept it on-topic and gotten you help.

Some newer members start by creating a new thread for each individual question for their system, when really they only need one thread to ask their questions in. If you make too many threads on the same topic (your system) at once, users will eventually stop responding and helping and/or moderation staff may close/merge with old threads. In many cases this is an unintentional negativity that can be resolved by sticking to fewer threads of the same topic.

Hope that helps! :toast:

Spikes are normal. You have at any one time up to 50 processes running

You created two threads on Windows 10 issues that could've been both reviewed and resolved in a single thread on the same topic (Windows 10 Issues), that's the point we're trying to make. ;)

No worries this time around, as Sneeky said, we're going to let this one go. It is more for the future..if you're having Windows 10 issues on your system, then use a single thread to get those issues resolved, that will provide a better outcome and response from the community in most cases.

:toast:

Back on-topic, you can use Techpowerup's image hosting to display images in your posts, go to Techpowerup.org, use the BBS code to copy to your post. That will be helpful to users here as well. :)

On the HDD and CPU usage, is that from the system in your system specs?

How long had the system been up and running?

If you go to the processes tab and sort by HDD usage, what are the top few? Likely some Windows services and/or Defender or other A/V solution as posted above. This is normal, Windows 10 is quite busy in the background and will back off when your system load increases from the user-end. The OS handles it pretty well in my experience, but systems with HDD's do suffer more than those with SSD's...so it isn't perfect.

Unless your system is dragging to a halt, I wouldn't worry about it. Many of the background services and optimization tasks that W10 runs help keep things running stable and smooth.

You can use the Disk selection to view the specific processes responsible for the disk reads and writes.
You can sort by Read or Write to help determine the greater offender, once we know what is doing it we can better help resolve or inform on the specific situation.

Two different topics that have nothing to do with each other really. Should they both be discussed in a "generalized" thread...instead of two completely different threads on two completely different topics? I beg to differ. And that's all I'm going to say on that.

On the topic of this thread...this is an issue with every Windows OS since XP. Well...I say that having no experience with 8, and assuming it to be no different that Vista, 7, and 10 in this regard. Which I feel is a safe assumption. In my experience Vista is probably the worst, 10 almost if not just as bad as Vista, and 7 being somewhat better than both. Anyway yes, it's very annoying. Especially from a gaming or benchmarking stand point. Where it can literally destroy performance. It's one of the main reasons Windows 10 has a gaming mode. Which really does seem to work at preventing it from happening when gaming mode is enabled while playing a game.

But to say that Windows 10(or any other non-XP OS for that matter) will "back off when system load increases from the user-end" is totally false in my experience. Which is why it's so annoying. Because it will start whenever it damn well pleases, and it will not stop until it decides it done. Unless you're using gaming mode while gaming. Other than that there is no other user control, or influence, over it that I'm aware of. Which is BS IMO. And there definitely needs to be a way to do something about it(aside from just gaming mode). It's my system, I'm the owner, I'm the administrator. I should be able to have full control over my OS. I understand that it may need to do certain things to keep things running smoothly. And that's going to mean periods of high CPU and disk usage. That's fine. But if I'm trying to use those resources to their full ability the OS needs to respect my authority and not even try to interrupt my session with it. This is not the case however, and it can be infuriating. :banghead:

One more thing. Disable telemetry. I just tried that recently and now Windows 10 is bugging me slightly less with this crap.

Correct. But i dont think i create the same posts to be honest
when one has problems with one system and it may have multiple causes
its Best to Stick to one Thread rather that the Shotgun Approch of multiple threads
With one thread people can see all the problems and then make Suitable suggestions based on the various problems

to many Threads on a compounded Problem can induce Helper Fatigue and your Get less help as people will not go from thread to thread to follow the (from your point of view) problem and offered Advice

Hope this explanation helps you understand some of the above posts and the Context in which they were made :)
