First unveiled in 2017, Intel’s Optane is a memory module designed to improve desktop and laptop performance for less money. It appears that Windows 10 May 2020 Update, which was released to mainstream users in May, is not compatible with some Intel Optane memory modules.

If you install Windows 10 May 2020 Update on a device with Intel Optane memory, you’re likely to get into trouble, according to my own tests and user reports on Intel forum, Twitter and Feedback Hub (1, 2, 3).

Microsoft is currently notifying some people about the update’s availability and it’s also blocking users from installing the update because it believes May 2020 Update isn’t ready for everyone.

The compatibility issues with certain Intel Optane memory modules is stopping the update from being installed via Windows Update, but you can still force it using the Media Creation tool.

If you force the update via Media Creation Tool, your PC is likely to run into compatibility issues. During the update process, Windows 10 removes one Optane Memory Pinning file from the device, but it would still try to run it and this leads to multiple errors and even performance issues.

How many people use optane in the first place?

Been looking for over 2 years and I'm still trying to find a solid explanation somewhere/anywhere by someone /anyone who knows the details on exactly what it does & how it does it for the average consumer/end user...

The biggest thing I've found so far: It just adds MOAR money to Intel's bank account .....:(..

How many people use optane in the first place?

You'd be surprised at how many Dell XPS computers I see that have a 1TB HDD + 16GB Optane module. They marketed the crap out of it, even going so far as to basically say it is a 1TB "SSD", but they got called out on that pretty quickly.

I will say, working on the computers with Optane modules in them was pleasant. They were definitely a lot more responsive than a computer running off of just a hard drive.

It's a cache, and it actually works pretty good. It's essentially just a rebranding of their "Smart Response Technology" with some tweaks. I've been using SRT with a 60GB SSD accelerating an HDD since at least Haswell. In it's default configuration, it acts only as a read cache. So it takes the most common things you access on the HDD and also stores those files on the SSD. So when you access the common files, they are accessed off the SSD. It works pretty well. I can have my entire steam library on an HDD, but if I'm playing one game almost all the time, it's like that game is running off the SSD.

You can also enable "Maximized Mode" which makes the SSD a write cache as well. This helps when installing things like games, since things are written to the SSD first, and then moved to the HDD for permanent storage later in the background.

Optane is the same technology, but tweaked to allow the Optane SSD to not just cache for HDDs, but also for slower SSDs. And I think it only works in Maximized Mode. But there is not nearly as drastic of a performance improvement when using Optane with an SSD as there is when you use it with an HDD. IMO, it is still best suited for accelerating an HDD.

Though I've moved on to using different caching software now due to the size limitations Intel imposes on the cache SSD and only use SRT with one older system still.

But with SSDs becoming so cheap, Optane caching just didn't really make sense but for a very brief window of time.

It doesn't matter, what matters is the shoddy job ms does with testing their updates. But hey, what can we expect when they ditch their entire QA department and replace it with "insiders".

Ahh, canned machines do.... makes sense.

lol, I know it doesn't matter, but just saying, anyone outside of a canned PC doesn't touch this...(most users here).

Is this relevant? Once again a Microsoft update ruined more things than the few it fixed ...

IMO, this is more on Intel than Microsoft. Each major feature update is basically a whole new OS. The 2004 build, or something extremely close to it, has been out for preview for a couple months now. Intel should have released an update to the Optane driver before 2004 started being rolled out to the general public.

srt is nice, you can cut out a portion of a bigger ssd too
not using it since I want total control over my ssd and hdd spce, but it works, works pretty well and with old hardware.

We do. The beta's were public for a very long time. I'm sure people know, if they were Optane users. Intel should've been on top of this.

AFAIK, the insider program has had access to 2004 for at least a month now, so Intel has had plenty of time to fix any issues.
