The linux kernel team considers anything in the kernel options as officially "supported." The staging tree is for what you are thinking of. PowerPC isn't there, it's a fully endorsed and supported platform.

Three times in the last six months his microphone or both the mic and speakers have stopped working on his headset. REALLY getting old. Oh yes, I just let them all install. Despite the reports one reads about updates nailing a PC, I have only experienced one that caused any problems. It was the one that screwed up my backup program that I posted about on TPU some time back. Months later Microsoft fixed the problem, bless 'em.

It's not just that, i just don't want 2-6 devices booting up when ever MS think it's time to update when ever they feel like, never mind the PC \ Laptop \ Tablet staying on after words for hours on end if not noticed.

Never mind the part tthe device can be stuck in a boot loop or even failing updates over and over at inconvenient times.

The only things I've done to prevent Windows from doing whatever it wants are disable 90% of the stuff with O&O ShutUP10 and set my connections as metered. Only rare security updates get installed without my consent (which are updates that shoudn't be delayed anyway). Everything else needs me to press "Install". I rerun O&O when a kernel update is applied since it will enable some undesirable stuff but O&O remembers the previous settings so I simply click on "revert the changes".

That would be incorrect. To disable updates, the service must be disabled. Windows Defender has a nasty habit of undoing users configs like that so you need to disable it first, then disable the update service.

There are all sorts of great config changes that can be made safely with that utility and all with just a couple of clicks. After setting changes a reboot will b e required, but that's to be expected.

I like Winaero Tweaker better. You can use it to disable Windows Update on W10 with one click too. There's also a good article on Winaero.com describing the manual methods for disabling it.

Yeah, I don't like the forced updates either, but it's just easier for me to let it do what it wants as I only use one PC. I can see that your scenario is a bit different and would be looking for more control too.

So you are going to tell me that, say, 2.6.32 branch supports all power states and other features of Ryzen?
Support goes only as far as backports are done. Once more, can run and is supported is not the same thing.

my tablet that has 10 updates and makes my broadcom .ac wlan not work till a full reboot. not even service disabling stops this. ugh.

what fixes actually do work? I've tried so many I'm getting tired of it.

Yup, that's what did the trick for me after some of my systems spontaneously started to update. Disabling Windows Update Service alone won't do it. You also need to turn off those scheduled tasks (which you normally can't because you don't have ownership).
