Hi there, am not a windows 10 expert. I have a pc in the bedroom on windows 10, I messed up the bootloader trying to fix the xp on that system.

System wont boot, trying to repair via win 10 usb installer.

Downloaded the media creation tool to install windows 10 installer on usb stick. Not compatible with a host of usb sticks I have. Tried the usb sticks that others use, but I think they use rufus; as the media creation tool by win 10 does not detect the usb stick.

So quick question, the win10 machine i am trying to repair the bootloader is a win7 upgraded to win10.
If i were to use the usb win10 installer to "repair installation" does the version of the iso downloaded via the media creation tool matter?

There is three options:
Windows 10
Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 N

Also is there a step by step instead of using rufus as I want to try an alternative method of creating a usb win 10 installer. Preferably with more compatibility.

System is a asus sabertooth 990 (r2?) with AMD phenom X 6.

Also is there any other software I can load onto the usb that can repair the bootloader easily?
That would be the ideal alternative. Thanks

The easiest way to fix this is with a W10 ISO and repair

Labeled "N" for Europe and "KN" for Korea

If 64 bit it needs to be 64 bit
If home it needs to be home

If you recently disconnected a secondary drive can cause this issue

There are many youtube videos on how to create a USB installer

I purchased an american win7 key from someone in america via the internet, and upgraded that key to windows 10.

The pc in question that I installed the win7 to has never been anywhere but australia.

So the repair option, even just for the bootloader has to match the os variations in question?

That is the problem. I cannot recall, but I think, with a small degree of uncertainty, the Home version. Would the just general "Windows 10" option in the media creation tool not provide a "catch-all" solution, at least to repair the bootloader? I am just hoping, out loud in the form of a question lol. Have you tried?

That's because the media creation tool only shows the options you have installed.

Its ether Home, Pro, 32 or 64. That's it The same as the license you bought

FYI as long as your w10 activated, you can do a clean install or repair with the windows 7 key. You can also go back to W7

Thanks so much for your time and responses. I cannot access the windows 10 as bootloader is probably corrupted hence can't boot (of course lol) but I am saying that I cannot retrieve my key from within the system. Is there a way to check windows 10 version, and retrieve key from DOS with some commands?

I have to go to work early tomorrow so I better head off to bed now. Thanks againfor your responses I will reply when possible

have a good one

You don't need the key. Just get a w10 ISO of Home 64 if that's what you have and install it. Its the HWID that activates the license not the number.
