Windows 7 32 bit key valid for 64 bit?

Hey all, I noticed in my e mail this morning that Newegg.ca is having a sale on Win 7 32-bit HP. I already have a 64 bit HP dvd and am wondering if the serial key from the 32 bit version will work if I use the 64 bit dvd. I tried googling but only found one definitive answer from one of those answers.com type of sites, so I decided to come here and get a concrete answer. thnx for reading.

Yes, for Vista, it works, but for Win7, it depnds on which key you have. Some do work, some do not, depends on which version of Win7 the key originally came with.

they are both home premium. Although the 32 bit version off the Egg may have SP1 on disc ? ( i don't know if thats availiable like that yet, just when I bought XP it had SP3 on it already)

It might work..usualyl they offer either 64-bit or 32-bit, and if you need 64-bit, you simply pay for them to ship you the 64-bit disc, or can download.

Many boxes that are shipping now only come with key, and you download which one you want, 32/64bit.

Give it a try, and let us know how it goes.

the 32 bit is $84.99 after discounts (instant $5 and $20 code) and the 64 bit is still $109. Even if it doesnt work, 32 bit for $85 is a good deal. This rig only has 4 gigs of ram anyways, my Bulldozer build in the Summer/Fall will get the 64 bit treatment regardless.

When i ordered Windows 7 when it first came out, it came with both the 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs and one serial. I do not really know if this helps your situation, however, I think that a single key would work for 64-bit and 32-bit as long as it is the same version of Windows (eg. Home Premium).

That's correct, the Home Edition family pack (3 user) I bought was $99 on Amazon a few weeks ago. It comes with a 32 and a 64 bit disk and one serial number.

UPDATE:

So it arrived a few minutes ago. I threw the code in and it said activation was successful

Rebooted and it still says 64bit OS under the system properties. So there we have it, a 32-bit serial WILL work on a 64-bit version of Windows 7.
