Windows 7 when to install SP1

After installing Windows 7, is it better to install SP1 first then check for updates or vice versa? I've always check for updates, install, reboot, check again and again until all the updates have been installed. After that, that's when I install service pack . Sounds pretty time consuming.

SP1 has all the update for 7 upto the release of SP1 so it would be better to install it then get the rest.....GL

I install Windows 7 with SP1 included

However, on vannila I did SP1 first and then rest.

Best option is to install from a W7 with SP1 disc, so you don't have to bother with a separate SP1 install, then just scan and install all the updates. As you don't have that option, install SP1 immediately after installing W7, then scan and install all the updates. Remember you might have to use the unofficial "magic patch" if scanning takes forever. Just Google for it, as it seems to change every so often.

Note that this "magic patch" is actually an official patch straight from Microsoft's website, so no risk of malware or anything. It's just identifying which one it is that's the magic part, cuz Microsoft sure don't want us to know. :rolleyes:

I'd really like to know how these guys figure out which patch it is.

Thanks. I thought there was some sort of prerequisites that had to be met before SP1 could be installed. I've been doing it wrong for a long time lol

I tried to make a slipstream Windows 7 install DVD with SP1, but I messed it up royally and it wouldn't boot. So, I do it the old fashion way.

Always install SP1 first, then go to askwoody.com for Windows update speed fix and find out what updates from WUD are telemetry or break windows 7.

I don't trust telemetry or stuff that breaks the os.

Ive been victim of updates that broke 7 to the point not even system restore could fix it.

Not only is that a narrow viewpoint, but after making that statement, you really have no place calling anyone else delusional. I am a professional and have no reservations calling Windows 10 trash software. Trust is earned and Microsoft has done much to make people concerned with actual security & personal/professional privacy very alarmed and unwilling to blindly trust them. Askwoody is a website dedicated to helping the average user and professional alike run Windows in a secure and stable manner. There is nothing wrong with being ultra cautious and demanding security from an OS and/or it's developer.

Been using this for years. It's a russian site, and the guy is really good. All telemetry updates are kept out. This is our procedure

1. Prepare for Windows (prferaby ISO w/ SP1) installation with USB tool or use available media
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

2. Connect boot drive data cable to lowest numbered SATA port .... but don't connect:
-Ethernet cable
-SATA Data Cable for any other drives

3. Install Windows to boot drive

4. Turn off Windows ability to install Hardware drivers

5. Install all hardware drivers from original media in boxes See Item 7 below

6. Connect ethernet cable and run Windows Update till it stops doing anything

7. Install latest drivers for ALL hardware from manufacturers web sites. The reason we didn't do this in step 5 is 3 fold:
-Sometimes MoBo CD comes with licensed utilities with product key embedded and these are not on web site versions
-Its advisable to establish a working out of box conditions
-Sometimes newer drivers require latest Windows Updates

If you have a 2nd drive ....

8. Shut down and connect HD data cable to 2nd lowest numbered SATA port.

9. Boot to BIOS and make sure that SSD is the 1st boot device, if not fix it

10. Boot to Windows
