Ok guys there might be a bunch of threads on this, but my net sucks and I dont have patience to search so sorry in advance. Anyways, I recently got a u410 laptop. I wanted windows 7. I REALLY wanted windows 7. I could not find anything so i settled for Windows 8. I feared I would hate it. Sure enough I did. So much so I downloaded Ubantu and botched up my pc. I had to pay Lenova $85 to get a back up disk so here I am again. I DONT want to spend $100 on windows 7 so please dont suggest that. (MS took enough of my money) Any tricks to make windows 8 less of a pain in the @$$. I know many here like it. I DONT. I gave it a chance. Still hate it. Hate all this app crap. Please help.

1) Your laptop didn't come with a way to make a restore CD or USB thumb drive so that you had to spend $85 on a restore disk?
2) What's your main issue with Win 8? If you just want to change its appearance so that it looks like Win 7, there are several apps that can do that.

It has something called a nova restore button but no disks. Ubantu petition I made destroyed the back up option according to lenova. Trust me I was screwed. At least I have the disks now. I don't like signing into the ms account all the time for everything. I just want a normal desktop without the crazy Windows 8 icon tabby screen. I think I will just go to downloads.com and try a few things

There should be a way to make some kind of external boot media that you can use to restore your laptop to an out of box state. I've never seen one that didn't have some kind of option for that. Too late now, obviously.

Atleast from my experience the recovery software is part of the initial installation from the OEM, as such once you reformat it does remove the capability of restoring previous OS installations.

Personnaly i would say best bet would be get the OS install of a website online and then use your CD key you have on the sticker on your computer.

Once you play around with Windows 8 it is alot less tricky, but yes at first it isn't always the easiest.

I used 8 for a bit, now im back on 7 nuff said.
Anyway download an app called classic shell , it brings the start menu back and its free , you can also switch it to not boot to the metro ui and basically turn it pretty much into seven inc what happens when the ms button is pressed and turn the magic corners off , all in classic shells options.

You can also make it sign in a local account instead of the signed in ms one , thats in the settings somewhere .

Yeah they keep that stuff on a small (hidden) partition more often than not these days.

Classic shell sounds great. Thanks so much guys. I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. I did something wrong with Ubantu qnd really screwed up the petitions. Even the hidden recovery one. I spent about 2 days trying to recover messing with the BIOS, UI BIOS and nova button. Not saying there wasn't a way out, but like u said, too late now. Live and learn I guess. The only reason I didn't get Windows 7 instead of the recovery disks was hope in recovering lost data on my hdd. Sadly I lost the data anyway.

I know just enough about computers to be dangerous.

Yet you messed up your installation, lost all your data and spent 2days trying to figure out how to fix it.

But yeah that classic shell thing.

EDIT: Also funny you started using it with the intention to hate it. You might not think that was your intention, but as you said you thought you would hate it almost nothing would have changed your mind about it.

Fuckin' blow me duetch - It's an expression, it means I know slightly more than a little.

Anyways, tried classic shell and love it! Really don't have a problem with win 8 now. What an easy, awesome fix! I did mess around with it before i bought the pc, but I never had the intentions of hating it. I just did. It does me no good to go out of the way to HATE something I just spent $600 on. In fact, I tried rather hard to like it. Bottom line: I didn't and Classic shell is a god send!

Treatment:

1. FreedomEclipse not acquainted with the expression of "knowing just enough about (x) to be dangerous" and consequently is sarcastic with Nihilus.

2. Nihilus becomes more annoyed than he should be and instead of alleviating Freedom of his ignorance, Nihilus calls Freedom something between "douche" and "Deutsch". He further states that he wants Freedom to play Joe Pesci in Casino.

3. Nihilus realizes his mistake and informs Freedom he is not his "buddy", guy.

4. All is well.
