Windows 8 momentary lock up then black screen then normal?

What happened is that I logged into my comp, but instead of logging in normally, I notice the spinning dots stop and my screen goes black for about 3 seconds. Then I suddenly see my windows 8 tiles. I did a full scan of my comp using Avast! and MalwareBytes and they both found nothing so it must be my video card or a temporary lock up. Can anyone explain this though?

Usually a sign of a hard disk loading lots of drivers and services. How many processes are loaded at boot?

Windows key + R > msconfig > Startup

Did you installed something new before the long boot started?

EDIT: Is this a new PC? How much RAM do you have installed? Could also be lack of RAM.

Very new. Much ram. wow.
No but seriously this is a new PC bought about a few months ago. I'm going to try to reduce the # of programs on start up and see if that helps. But my computer has never done this. My computer booted normally though so there's no problem. It's just the fact that the black screen occurred seemed strange for me.

One question what usb devices do you have plugged in into your pc when you log back in.

One of my Win 8 machines also does this but it loads from a slow ass WD drive with 2MB of cache. Still, if you say it's something that suddenly started I would look into the last installed programs.

The guide is for W7 but also applies to W8.

I'd be looking at HDD health myself. I had this problem just before my SSD died.
