I'd personally say scrap that HD and buy a new one.. still the chance the hd shit itself or is unstable. And with it only being a 40GB its not a bad idea to upgrade anyway

And an old HD , even on SATA is slow comparing at least with Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 .
I've seen the difference , only one disc on 500G version .
