Windows Explorer

I have Windows 7. Every time I try to open up my external HD the Windows Explorer quits working. I researched a little at this forum and "Wile E" had said

It's AVI files causing the problem. It happens when explorer tries to preview them. You can shut off previewing, and it goes away.

Open a run box, and type this:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

It will prevent Explorer from trying to preview video files.

The post was 5 years old. Does anyone know what command I would give to to shut off previewing? Thankyou

You can also try going into "Folder Options" then the "View" tab and checking "Always show icons, never thumbnails". To get to folder options open a window and select "Organize" and then "Folder and search options". :toast:

EDIT: If tatty's solution doesn't work then try this. :toast:

Has it worked before on that system? Is it assigned a drive letter and recognized by windows computer management?
Have you tried it in another system?
Is your external drive powered by the port or a power brick?
Have you tried a different data cable?
Have you run a windows disk scan for errors on it... if that will not run; then, try running a diagnostic usb drive or a cd/dvd and check the drive for errors. Maybe something linux based.

Some info:
Five Best System Rescue Discs
And, another: FalconFour’s Ultimate Boot CD/USB 4.6

If this is the first time using the external dive with that system, you may want to try install the software for it... like the ses driver... depends on the model of the drive.

Edit:

What model is it?
