my X79 system with W7 died so I guessed it was time for me to go to windows 10.

After a few UI tweaks here and there -- namely ClassicShell I feel very very very at home and its almost like i never left W7. The only real difference ive noticed so far is that I can play the odd game in DX12 (because not a lot of games support DX12 -- same story as always....) and that windows updates break some functionality once in a while in various degrees.

I do notice W8.1 is very lonely up there. In my secondary rig I use W8.1. I use it for older games, disc based games, and for all web activities. It’s actually super hardened for web browsing, and serves to keep my main rig for gaming off of anything web related other than Steam, Origin, and Uplay.

:( For those who have already expressed, and for those thinking about expressing your opinions about which Windows version is best (or which is not), please refrain from doing so. That is not the intent of this poll.

To reiterate from the opening post, this is NOT an "opinion" poll. There are dozens (100s? 1000s?) of other heated threads for that. Please!!! Let's not allow this one to go that way too.

I would really appreciate everyone's understanding on this and ask that everyone respect the intent of this poll. Thanks.

********

You should add Windows 98-95 and older as we have nostalgic users over here!
Just kidding
I thought about it but the numbers are just too low to be significant. In fact, I almost left out XP and Vista because I felt those numbers would be too low too. But since we still occasionally see XP and Vista users seeking help, I decided, out of curiosity, to leave them in too.
It's unfortunate that there isn't a "Not Windows" option
As noted in the opening post, this poll is not intended for Linux users. The same applies for users of other operating systems. This poll is just see among Windows users, which version of Windows they use on their primary systems.

Haha.. not the only machine I've used it on. 7 just seems less bloated.. I can't pinpoint why. Even HDDs don't seem as sluggish (had one in a laptop. I don't remember it being so painful as trying to run Win10 with one.. but maybe I'm wrong).

Wow, 6 to 52 Windows 7 to Windows 10. I didn't expect the gap to be so wide. Big fat ZERO for XP, Vista, and 8.x. Not really surprising on Vista, but I thought there'd be at least one or two on XP and a few more on 8.x...

I haven't used XP since like... the early 2000s. And barely that. I went back to a Mac for awhile.

I always called it the Fisher Price OS.

Yes and no. It's "Windows as a service". It seems they took a cue from Apple, who has released many updates of Mac OS X, but never changed the "X".

At this point, Windows 10 has gone through enough iterations since 2015 that it would have usually warranted a new "11" version, but it seems they're not following that scheme anymore.

Do you mean there will be changes in the windows it self but under the same name " Windows 10 " ?

Yes.. but there's already been many changes to warrant a new version (if they followed the old scheme).. but it's all free updates now. Released every 6 months or so.

It's "Windows as a service".
It is not "Windows as a service". Marketing weenies and some in the IT press are calling it that thinking it cool, but ain't gonna happen - at least not until everyone in the world has a fast Internet connection AND all the connected devices adhere to standard protocols. Apple is able to get close to this simply because Apple is so proprietary, and they set their own standards. There are way too many players (many of whom compete against each other) in the "wintel" industry for them all to come together again like they did with ATX. The proof there is in the very proprietary notebook industry.

Windows "Update" you might call a service, but the OS is still, by its very nature, is a "local" application, and always will be. Remember what the basic job of an OS is. It is to establish and facilitate communications between all the various components within a computer (CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, I/O ports, networking, etc.). That can only be done locally.

Wow, 6 to 52 Windows 7 to Windows 10. I didn't expect the gap to be so wide.
I did because of what I see in the real world with my clients and off-line collegues. :D I suspected many more on this site use W10 than let on, and they are reluctant to admit it publicly for whatever reason. That's why I created the poll. I wanted to see. I think this poll is very telling. Thus far I think it shows those complaining about W10 are really a small minority making a lot of noise who are then parroted by others.

Do you mean there will be changes in the windows it self but under the same name " Windows 10 " ?
It has already happened in the guise of "Creator" and "Anniversary" updates. I do not agree, however, they amount to or warrant the "Windows 11" moniker. But I do think you could relate them to major upgrades to previous Windows versions in the past Microsoft called "service packs". So if Microsoft followed past naming conventions, we might be at "Windows 10 SP3", for example.

I do suspect at some point the version number will go away and it will become simply "Microsoft Windows", or some new name reflective of their "vision" for future computing.

At any rate, I see Windows today very much like our (or my anyway) home built computers. It has been many many years since I built an entirely new computer me. That said, my current computer does not look anything like it did when new. It has gone through a couple motherboard upgrades, several graphics card upgrades, at least one new PSU, migrated from HDs to SSDs, and even has a different case today. The only thing original is my trusty THX Logitech surround sound speaker system. So my computer has "evolved" over many years to keep up with new technologies, new software and new hardware. And that is what Windows 10 is doing. It is evolving to keep up with new hardware technologies and, it is important to note, new security threats too. And that's a very good thing.

Windows 10. Funny how some of the government programs that I use for work were designed with Windows 95 in mind and yet they still work almost perfectly fine on the latest OS. I only have VMs of Windows XP and 7 for the rare app that refuses to work.

Windows 7 - 42.45%
Windows 10 - 33.85%
Windows 8 - 15.48%
Windows XP - 4.88%
Mac OS X 10.13 - 3.95%
Mac OS X 10.12 - 2.64%
Linux - 1.51%
Mac OS X 10.11 - 1.31%
Windows 8 - 1.16%
Mac OS X 10.10 - 0.79%

Another source has different numbers ... According to statcounter, Win 10 finally passed Win 7 in January of 2018
http://gs.statcounter.com/os-version-market-share/windows/desktop/worldwide

Win10 48.18%
Win7 38.65%
Win8.1 7.35%
WinXP 3.06%
Win8 2.1%
WinVista 0.6%

Of course those with a preference for "their choice" to be more popular will have reasons to discount either source. Both sites are black boxes so there's no justification to declare one being more right than the other. Other sites report slight variations ... but Win7 will finally succumb over time as MS doesn't like new computer vendors who sell new units with older OS's. (Our laptop builder recently dropped the Win 7 option). It is pretty safe to say that Gamers are more into Win10 and that those boxes made for earning a living lean more to Win7.

As for a forum poll that caters to enthusiasts, tinkerer's and gamers ... no, that's not going to be an indicator for the general population, jest the subset of nerdom that we all belong to ... Also in any poll, say a mobile phone poll, the number of folks who have the latest iPhone or Android thingie are far more likely to respond than than those who just get a new phone when their old ones stop working. With millions, even billions of sources, the stat counters provide far more meaningfull data mostly because folks are not "opting in"

Windows 10 feels old and out dated (and breaks alot), looks like it was designed back in the 70/80s, guess its hip to be square?

:(

Once again,
To reiterate from the opening post, this is NOT an "opinion" poll. There are dozens (100s? 1000s?) of other heated threads for that. Please!!! Let's not allow this one to go that way too.

I would really appreciate everyone's understanding on this and ask that everyone respect the intent of this poll. Thanks.

@Bill_Bright Thank you for the Poll, it is interesting indeed. :toast:
I still use a modded Win 7 version on my PC, and on our laptop, I use another modded Win 7 instead of Toshiba's version.
Since I'm still on my old tech, the "newest" part is the Titan SC other than the SSD
I actually have many modded Window's, some of Vista, some Win 95's but most are Win 7 at the core. I was using 4 different version's and would just change the drive in BIOS to boot the the version I wanted to play with. Got tired of using a boot loader :fear:
EDIT, It has SP 1 and No Updates after what came with the version

That is totally irrelevant to this poll. This poll is about our "primary" computers only. Please, let's keep it on that.

That's not what you asked for. The post is 100% responsive to what you asked for. The data does show what version of Windows " Windows Users" are using. If that's what you want, should go back and edit the OP and write what you mean.

Change from "Out of curiosity, I am wondering what version of Windows ****Windows users*** are using on their main computer. " .

@anselmo the first windows 8 user here !
Yes, due to the fact that the hardware on my main machine (aka, my crappy Toshiba laptop, with an AMD E1 chip) doesn't go that well with Windows 10 and the original key for this was for Windows 8, making 8 a nice choice, especially paired with Classic Shell.
